Vinyl in Yorkshire?

Hi all. I'm on holiday in Haworth next week and wondered if there are any decent second hand vinyl shops in the vicinity (so that I can spoil a perfectly good family holiday!)

Ta.

Don't know how far you want to travel, but there's a good one in Huddersfield. I can't remember the name (Wall of Sound maybe?), but it's opposite the train station.

Jumbo in Leeds. There's also one or two others in Leeds but I don't reckon much to them really.

Vinyl Tap in Huddersfield, not been to the shop but bought stuff from them on ebay and seem OK. They are reviewed in this month's Record Collector.

(Looks to be the one Gary mentioned as it is opposite the train station)

Discovery Music Store

Tel: 01274 304207 - 73 Westgate, Bradford, West Yorkshire, BD1 2RD

Downstairs for LP's upstairs for the new fangled CD's (witchcraft I calls it)

There is a ENORMOUS basement of s/h vinyl underneath Wall of Sound in Huddersfield, potential for many hours of browsing.

Also the one in Stockon-on-Tees, if that is in your catchment area is it.

York itself is a bit of a vinyl void there

Other thoughts may occur.

Crash and Record Collector on Leeds

4 in Sheffield, but the vinyl side of Record Collector is intermittent in opening, I left empty hearted by it not being open is it.

Is Rebound(?) still at the bottom of Gillygate in York? It was still there 6 months ago. Not a huge stock but he's very careful with his grading. Selective rather than exhaustive there.

Vinyl Tap took Wall of Sound over in January. Upstairs there is now much more new vinyl but downstairs is crammed with S/H mostly at £2. Also if you find anything on the website they will get it in for you thus saving the postage.

That's the one I was refering to. Somehow, in a tardis like manner, the basement is about 10 times the size of the ground floor shop is it. Many records to sift through there.

If you are in Yorkshire on Saturday then there is a big record fair at the Qween's Hotel in Leeds. I'll be there.

There is actually a shop in Howarth - a secondhand bookshop - that has (or certainlyused to have) a small vinyl selection. I bought quite a bit from there, all great condition. On the main cobbled street, called Venables and Bainbridge or similar.

Look out for the pub further down that street, used to have all the Timothy Taylors ales on at the same time...

My last trip to York a few weeks ago, I found a few shops selling vinyl but at York prices. There was some very shabby (quality in terms of very scuffed sleeves and vinyl) albums with £10+ price tags.

I work less than 500 yards from Record Collector in Sheffield and to be blunt, unless you are buying new, again their prices are high for the quality they are selling (OK students offloading all sorts of nonsense after being used as students do), when you can find them open although they will open the vinyl side if you ask.

There is a guy who opens odd hours who does have some nice stuff, especially 7" singles which he seems to specialise in on Rockingham Street, bottom end where it looks like no one ventures. His stock is in cardboard boxes which looks a bit alarming, especially the end few albums, but there is some decent stuff in there if you are prepared to rummage around. He isn't open every day though so best do t'internet search for his opening times.

I have been to that one in Rockingham St, as you say somewhat intermittent in opening times is it. Got a few items, hip-hop and some obscure northern post-punk there.

Sort of given up on RC in Sheffield, Rarely open, sluggish stock (because he is rarely open?) and I agree on the price vs quality, £15 - £20 there for albums you see in Brizzle for £6-£8.
