Record shops in the New York

Geezers,
I'm going to NY at the start of next month, there's two of us going with a luggage allowance of 23KG each, so assuming 12 - 14KG actual luggage, I figure that allows me somewhere around 16KG ish record space on the way back (factoring in a trip to B&H photo).
I'll be heading to DMG fo' sure, but where else is worth checking out? I'm interested in places which sell stuff I can't get elsewhere, rather than the usual all purpose kind of shops that every city has.

You know that custome won't weigh your baggage on the way out then wonder why it has increased by 16kg on the way back lol.

Well if they don't weigh it on the way out, how will they know? If they ask, I'll tell them my clothes got wet.

Thanks, there's a few things that look interesting on the list. I'll have to find a convincing reason to go to NJ. Maybe a Sopranos tour.

NYC ain't as good as it used to be, say, 10 years ago for used vinyl. Nevertheless there are some still decent places. Here are my recommendations.

Academy
There are several branches of this store -- two in Manhattan (different genres in each store) and one in Brooklyn (Williamsburg, 1 stop into Brooklyn). For me, this is probably the best store for selection and decent prices (for a big city). All branches are worth a visit.

Mercer St Books
Used book store, with some used vinyl. In the Village, near NYU.

East Village/Alphabet City
If you wander around Alphabet City (i.e. where the streets are named "A", "B", so on), there are a number of small specialist shops. I popped into a couple, and they had decent selection. Interesting area, it has funky small shops and restaurants.

Princeton Record Exchange
This place is definitely worth the trip from NYC. It's an hour train ride from Penn Station on the NJ Transit (make sure you get the transfer to Princeton from Princeton Junction). Selection can be great and there are lots of records (I gave the $2 bins a miss because there's a lot to go thru). Princeton is also the home of Princeton University -- it's a beautiful campus to wander around for the good part of an afternoon.

Funny, I regret not visiting the Exchange more when I was studying at the university there (too busy getting drunk and chasing women I think!).:D

Have fun.

yeah princton record exchange is a great shop! when i was over staying in princeton i would get my coffe form small world walk down the road and spend hours in there! go into manhatten for the day do my stuff then come back and go to prx again....cost a fortune bringin' it all back :)

The main one, Other Music,

The 3 round Bleeker Street, one general, one rock, ("I don't do Punk!") one dance.

There are a couple round the university (as usual), and Greenwich village, poss. A1 Music?

I didn't have time to go to the out of Manhattan record barns, plus Mrs DS would not have had the patience to wait while I sifted, unless there was a cafe and clothes shops adjacent is it.

DS

House Of Oldies, 35 Carmine St just off Bleecker St I spent a few bob there last year and managed to haggle the odd price down.

What the heck were you doing staying over in Princeton? It's a prissy little rich town with overpriced accommodation.

I should know, I went to school there!

There is (or was) also Jazz Record Center - located in a warehouse/office building somewhere around 7th Ave and 28th Street. A tendency to be pricey - but I've seen stuff there that I haven't anywhere else.

No camera shopping! I won't be able to afford to get home. Going to B&H to get a portable digital recorder so I can make some binaural recordings of the trip. Although I could be tempted if they have a reasonably priced 80mm for my Hasselblad.
Some galleries that look worth a visit in the link though, so thanks. The John Stevenson gallery looks worth the trip.
