Pakistani version of Take five

Oh yes...

Loved everything about it. Melody on Sitar! Paul Desmond... who's he? who needs him?

But the knockout for me was the tabla player. Just incredible groove. I didnt know what he was doing rhythmically but it was just wonderful.

thanks for posting

There was a programme on radio four recently, featuring the making of this piece of music. Not much to go on sorry, but someone here might remember the programme title.

Do you mean the version linked to in this thread, or the original version?

If the original, it was written by the alto sax player Paul Desmond, and not Dave Brubeck, who so often gets the credit for it. ie Take Five, by Brubeck :(

My understanding of the background is that Desmond was in a Casino playing a slot machine. The mechanism was churning out a repeated rhythm in 5/4 time and it interested Desmond. This is the rhythm that you hear the string section playing right at the beginning, on the recording in this thread.

(quaver, off beat crotchet, off beat quaver, 3 crotchets )

He took this groove away and it was the basis for his tune.

I would be interested in a link to this radio programme if anyone knows it.
