Luxman Speaker components. Anybody recognise them?

Guys, I've a set of Luxman speakers here. Quite a few lads have been to the house and seen them and wondered what the tweeters/drivers were from, or if they are indeed actually Luxman's own. I've had a few suggestions of what other speakers may have used them but nothing as of yet conclusive........pioneer and Yamaha both being mentioned.

I just thought I'd post here to see if anyone may recognise them or indeed had a set of these speakers and investigated them.

So little about them on the web hence the post. I ask because if I knew their source I'd look for some spares for the future and stash them away.

Many thanks lads, I'd really love to know more about these. Have been searching without success for a few months now for info.

Thanks Istari, yes lx 77 and that page seems to be the only one I can find offering clues.
I was certain I'd find info. thrown up on a search from forums such as this but not a lot has been said about them it seems.

Many thanks again though.

Do you have a picture of the whole speaker you can post?
I used to work for the UK importers of Luxman in the 70s and to this day I can't remember ever seeing or hearing a pair of Luxman speakers.

I would suggest your best bet of finding any further information (and possibly fellow owners) would be to post on Audiokarma, they tend to specialise in 60's/70's Jap gear.

They look to be a nice pair of speakers anyway, classic 3-way design at the time 99% of Japanese manufacturers were pushing 6-way squawk boxes now referred to as "Kabuki speakers" so Luxman must have been aiming for sound quality rather than bling :)

Thanks Istari, I actually met the chap who runs AudiKarma at the Northwest and promised I'd join. I'll have a look there.

Great Barry, thanks for that. Just taken a couple of full pics. Hope they may ring a bell.

Just realised they are 77b, never knew that until 20 seconds ago. If it makes any difference!!

They don't ring any bells here.
Most likely there own units built in Japan.
Luxman used to do everything in house.
Even though we were the importers we never stocked the speakers because of so many great British speakers at the time.

Thanks Radine.
Sadly I've not ever had them set up properly yet, they are just in the dining room pointing at a big dining table.

I've tried them though in this position with a Nait, and then a Myst amp and they sounded as good as any of the big British bruisers I've had/got. I then tried them with a Japanese amp of the same period and again they worked very nicely across the range.

Someone, it may have even been Tony L suggested giving them a try with a valve amp, this produced a result that was so silky, smooth but still concise that I now need to get them set up properly for a proper try out. I was very pleased with the sound. They performed with valves better than anything else I've had so far. As I say, just so laid back and very warm sounding. I just need to give them a bit of space now.

Try and get a close up photo of the panel on the back where all the writing is. There may be some very small Japanese (or English) text there that is preceded by a sort of T in a circle, which is probably immediately above the serial number. This would indicate the factory where the product was manufactured. If you can get a photo up, and it's there, I can tell you.
I'd be a bit surprised if they really built the speakers themselves in their own factory, but anything was possible in the 70s! Up until a couple of years ago Lux had an extensive lineup of car audio that included some rather good speakers...
Lovely looking things, and nice to hear they sound good, too.

Many thanks Joel for the input, appreciated.

Sadly I can't find any telltale markings like those you mention.

The small writing just says "Mfd by Lux Corporation Japan"

Thanks again for that though.

No circle in a T probably means they really were manufactured in-house at Luxman. It's fun to be able to confirm (more-or-less) what Barry wrote above and what the stickers say.
I was thinking along the same lines as Istari, but apparently not.
The 70s were crazy times.

Luxman were owned by Alpine for a while weren't they ? Would explain the decent car audio.
Indeed - my utterly excellent L570Z's amp (not my apostrophe) is from the Alpine era, and is not only wonderful but will outlive me (it had its first service in 25 years in April...).
Kenny's speakers are from long before the Alpine era, but there is still a hint of the car audio styling in there.
Who knows! The 70s were pretty crazy.

Nice one Joel, I'd love to hear that beauty of an amp you have through these.

I've now played these through Naim, Valves, and other bits and bobs. I set them up with these last week and it's the best I've heard them so far. In fact I'm going to set up a complete vintage Jap system as the main hifi for a while in the main listening room ........let them breathe a little bit.
