The one with the white label is a single sided test pressing!

I thought you might like it!

I've been trying to describe the sound but just can't seem to do it justice, "vivid" would seem to fit the best, it's amazing what could be done with just three microphones! However Szigeti was geting on a bit when he recorded it and he's clearly not at his best, which is why this hasn't been re-issued on CD.

Any chance you could do me a favour - if you get the chance could you take a nice straight on out of sleeve picture of the side one label of the standard LP (not the test press) and bang it to my email (the Paypal one will do - it all routes to my main one). I'm currently updating my classical label FAQ in the pfm record shop and I haven't currently got a classical Mercury Living Presence Stereo (just two different types of mono and a lot of jazz which is a slightly different design). I've been taking pictures of labels all morning, 33cx, SAX, LXT, ALP, Argo etc!

Tony.

Thanks Richard, I also need a UK red-semi Columbia SAX, the one that looks like a red-semi ASD but with musical notes in place of the dog. I've got that variation for the 33cx mono, but not the stereo SAX. I think that's it - I'm just concentrating on the UK stuff for the time being.

Tony.

It's a very useful resource Tony's classical labels. Besides he lives round the corner from me. I'm rather jealous of that Szigeti record. Where did you find it?

"It's a very useful resource Tony's classical labels."

Agreed.

I found the record whilst helping a chap I met through the old record shop. Bill Newman, a sound engineer who used to work for EMI in the fifties. He was having problems with his TV and video set-up and I was roped in to help.

He has thousands of LP's, mostly test pressing's, played on a Garrard 301!

Sadly I've only borrowed it but I may make an offer.

Oooh, this thread had me running to my racks to dig out my only Mercury Living Presence LP. It's a copy of Bizet's Carmen Suite conducted by Paray.
The Label on mine is slightly different - plum coloured, but the number (MG50135A/B) appears just above the crest at the bottom of the label. Also, where Basil's has 'Living Presence Long-Playing' around the label, mine says 'Living Presence High Fidelity' and at the top of the label (where Basil's says 'Stereo') mine simply says 'Mercury'.
The Sleeve (with that famous photo of the bullfighter) has a pink band at the top, with 'Stereo' in white and a white Mercury logo in the top left corner.

I'm giving you all the detail on the off chance that this might be worth a few bob....
Will happily provide jpegs if they are of use for the faq (just let me know your email and what resolution you'd prefer for the pics).

I also have at least one silver/blue SAX and may be able to help with a red semi SAX (EDIT - you've found one).

Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin, thanks - I'd certainly like a photo of it, I'll drop you a PM. As to value I gave no idea as my guide doesn't cover Mercury. What I tend to do myself is to Google the catalogue number, see what other places are selling stuff for and then undercut them!

Tony.

I've just uploaded the new FAQ - pretty much all there now bar Mercury. Tony.

Excellent. Re Philips "Hifi Stereo" here a little family photo I shot for you tonight to get some serious drooling going..

There are three slightly different versions of the Hifi Stereo label in above records - I notice the one you show in FAQ is a fourth version.

1. "Made in Holland" at Philips Logo;

2. The smaller record has a red version of the above label

3. "Made in Holland" on rim;

Further on you might want to include the Philips Minigroove label as well (unless you categorize them the "Normal" label.
Dutch and UK examples;

Me too (well I was at racks already pulling Philips vax) - here's it is...

Ok enough vinyl porn and sorry for the crappy picture quality.

Cheers
Carl

Carl, that's excellent - I'll nick a couple of those Philips pics if I may. I didn't have any Philips monos to hand at all. Do you happen to know if there is any significance to the label colour of the later 'normal' ones, I've seen back, red, blue and I think tan? It doesn't seem to correspond to anything I can see, i.e. it's not box sets, dates or anything obvious like that.

Steve, if you are able to I'd appreciate it - the more variations I can see the broader I can make the faq.

Tony.

I've got a sealed living presence at home, I keep meaning to break the seal, but somehow I've never got round to it. I don't think I've got any of those Philips ones though. I'm getting jealous.

No problem, next time I visit Bill Newman, I'll take the camera and ask if he minds digging out some of his rarest records. If you could let me know if you're looking for pictures of anything in particular, it would help.

Is this OK?

Thanks - I'll have a go at doing the Mercury section now.

Tony.

PS if anyone spots any errors in this faq please let me know!
