Getting rid of vinyl

Cheese

Bitter lover
Hi all,

I decided to get rid of my vinyls, there is a time for everything. And I am not too motivated to carry the paper bags once again from the current basement to the basement of the new place.

I suspect this topic has been covered a number of times, so thank you for any links.

My project is to sell the stuff through eBay in packs that make sense, say "all of AC/DC", "10 music scores", or "10 prog records".

For this I will need cardboard boxes, each capable of containing 5-10 records.

Where do you order them ?

P.S.: if you find there are better ways to get rid of a vinyl collection, as long as it's not 'throw them in the bin', I am open to any advice.

Thanks. Cheese

What are the postal charges like in Swizzyland? Here you can mail up to 2Kg (5-6 LPs) for £3 so it makes sense to do job lots of five records at a time.

As you're sorting them out I'd also have a quick look at Discogs in case there are any you want to list individually. Australian first pressings of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Highway to Hell are worth around £150 each for example. You never know : )

I like selling on Discogs because it's quick and easy to list stuff and easy to gauge market prices. Obviously being certain which pressing you have and grading correctly are crucial.

I recently cleared out a job lot of low value records as a job lot by advertising on Gumtree. If you have something similar that can also be worth a shot.

Obviously I'll take any rare free jazz or original Blue Notes off you for the cost of shipping.

There'll be advertisers in Record Collector magazine who specialise in bulk record and box set mailers. I would start there. A standard box set mailer will probably take 5 or 6 single LPs

Vinyl retailers who stock the new stuff will be getting packs of 5s and 10s all the time, I would imagine. If you have one of those nearby ....

I got a surprisingly good price for my records at a nearby second hand record shop. Obviously you would expect to get more by selling yourself to private buyers but it is a lot of hassle and probably a lengthy process. If you have second hand stores nearby it might be worth an enquiry at least.

I fashion my own packaging from recycled cardboard boxes for bundles up to 2kg. It does take a bit of effort but you end up with a snugly fitting and very resilient package.

I took a bundle to my local second hand vinyl shop, and got more than I expected, although way less than the discogs estimates.

Tend to find that dealers here will typically pay around 30% of retail for a largish collection although this can increase above 50% for specific higher value items (probably because they sell much quicker to known buyers).
