I was a regular too - they used to let me rummage through the storeroom for the LPs that hadn’t gone out on display

There used to be a similar shop in central Manchester called Gibbs. Second hand full price LPs were £2.99/3.99. I bought a lot from them.

Gibbs was a place of pilgrimage whenever I went home in the late 80s.

My first was a version of the Dvorak New World around 1963. It was one of those cheap imports from some eastern european Soviet Satellite country'

Followed by a Bach Brandenburgs of a similar origin. I still have it.

I couldn't name the actual first one. I bought a few classical records in one go from a charity shop last year, but my favourite from the bunch is Swan Lake with Pierre Monteux conducting.

The wonderful and very cheap MFP (music for pleasure) label allowed me to buy Swan Lake in 1966.
I loved the gorgeous melodies of Tchaikovsky in my teens and still do,of course.

As a early teen I was given a copy of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto 1 (Richter/BPO/Karajan).

Similar but mine was a cassette of Richter with Mravinsky. Went into a music shop near Tottenham Ct Rd (student at UCL) and after saying I liked that was recommended Mahler 3 ( Solti) which was the first I bought.
