DIY Naim NAC 72/ 82 Recap - Capacitors

I had to check the price @Van Nguyen quoted as I thought it must be a typo - seriously over £5 (+VAT) for a fart arse tantalum bead capacitor - that is taking the p**s big time.

You could use two of these in parallel to replace the 'maroons' - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/37162251...d=link&campid=5338728743&toolid=20001&mkevt=1

It would be a bit awkward to fit two caps into the space of one, particularly with the RoE since it is very short legged. Also they must be about as old as the originals so will need careful reforming before use and even then may not be any good.

There was a fella trying out NoS maroons some time back and IIRC it didn't go well.

I guess if you bought enough in bulk from this supplier to offset the postage it is probably not a bad price (yes I know there are import charges as well) and would ensure the "Naim' sound is retained.

You're likely right but it might be worth trying - at least you'll know they won't be 'worn out'. I have some at home and may try them out.

I downloaded the Cyril Bateman pages the first time I found Jan Didden's site. Follow this link and read CB's thoughts on distortion introduced by such as Black Gate/ Elna Silmic capacitors in the signal path:-
https://linearaudio.nl/sites/linearaudio.net/files/Bateman EW 01 2003 mar2003 10 to 100uF caps and 100 Hz measurements_0.pdf
Thanks for that interesting link, Richard. The article is written from the point of view that distortion is a bad thing. However, since different capacitors (or amplifiers) sound different, then they can only do that by distorting the sound, otherwise they’d all sound identical. Therefore, selecting capacitors (or amplifiers) based on lowest distortion does not necessarily equate with a more favourable sound. Why not just use a design without coupling capacitors if that is the aim?

@Avon - I most certainly don't profess to be either an electronics expert or an expert in designing amplifiers but given the gentleman concerned clearly knows a thing or two about capacitors I would say his opinions couldn't be dismissed.

For instance he dismisses anything tantalum based at the outset.

Keeping the thread OT the Roederstein 47uF EB's are still available as well - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/32383923...d=link&campid=5338728743&toolid=20001&mkevt=1

I never fail to be amazed at supposedly unobtainable components that still appear to be out there or that can be made up from the values available. The only capacitor I have to admit I can't now find is the 10uF/ 25V BC128. You find yourself coming up against stuff like - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/17138639...d=link&campid=5338728743&toolid=20001&mkevt=1

Even the Turkish suppliers stock have 'disappeared/ diminished' in the last 3 - 4 months. This is the same supplier that hiked the price of the Roedersteins I just bought off them by around 75%!!

Hi I have a trusty 72 and like to get it recapped. I'm fairly hands-on so would like to attempt it myself. I think soon after doing my 72 I might attempt an 82 as it seems to share similar

47uf 40v - qty 3
47uf 50v - qty 6
10uf 35v - qty 12 (kemet) T368?? Tantalum

Does anyone know where I can source these reliably? Ie not ebay or amazon.
Been looking at mouser or cpc farnell but too many choices.

Which brand, temperature, tolerance, or even part number or even a link would be useful.
I scoured the pages but couldn't find any answers. Thanks in advance
Check : West Florida Components .com // tantalum capacitors

They certainly look right.

No real issues with using NoS tants since they have more or less infinite shelf life.

The only problem you can get is if the resin cracks and they oxidise.

Good Evening,

OK so you need to use two in parallel but you even have the original Rubycon TWSS pattern capacitors available - https://www.ebay.com/itm/1211761899...d=link&campid=5338728743&toolid=20001&mkevt=1 or you could get the proper item(?) - https://www.tedss.com/50TWSS10 OK so the minimum order level is 84 items but an international order needs to be $200........... (they have thousands apparently)

Belated edit/ addition - It looks like Elna Stargets' are available from https://www.ashlea.co.uk

Hi all thank you so much for all the comments. Sorry to resurrect this thread. Just wondering in the UK could anybody help source the following? OR a better alternative?

It's for an NAC 82.

24x 10uF 35V 5% radial tantalum - Kemet T356G106J035AT or AVX TAP106J035 - Better alternative? - This one is a real struggle as it's still 5 pounds each!
8x 47uF 50V 20% radial electrolytic - Nichicon Muse Gold UKZ1H470MPM (HFC)- Better alternative?

I looked at Farnell, Mouser, and Hifi Collective. I'm a bit skeptical about some links on eBay and prefer not to buy from the US.

Thanks in advance :)

Basically these days, yellow = Kemet; they have bought-out everyone else anyway...

And

Technically, through-hole tant caps like this will always have a small positive value of ESR, and it is useful, in the ways Naim use tantalum caps. On the inputs and outputs of voltage regulators, it aids stability. In the coupling cap positions, it is constant, and still utterly-trivial.
I've used these and sim, for the kind of project you are after - and have no hesitation to recommend.

Thanks! Are there any suitable 47uF 50V in Farnell as well so I can shop all in the same place? Also on the 72 can I can '47uF 50V' in place of the '47uF 40V'?
