Digital Interconnect

James

Lord of the Erg\o/s
I have made a bunch of audio interconnects with Mogami W2549 microphone cables and Eichmann or Neutrik Profi RCA plugs. I now need a digital interconnect, which I understand is 75R coax.

Can I just use garden variety coax (say, for TV or radio) and make up my own S/PDIF cable or is there better quality to be had with specialist wire?

I also assume regular RCA plugs are fine, as I have a spare, unused pair of Neutrik Profi.

Thoughts?

Ideally you should use SD1 cable, which is 75R impedance and BNC connectors suited to the cable, then BNC to RCA adaptors if required. CPC do a good range of cable types, lengths and costs

Any 75 Ω coax will do, as will most any RCA plug. There will be some impedance mismatch at the plugs, though not enough to matter.

That's useful, thanks. Will there be any appreciable difference between RG-59 and RG-6?

Probably not.
I used to make them out of serial digital cable rated for 12G but that's overkill. I think I sold exactly four when I added it to the WH range of cables ages ago, and one of those was cheap on Ebay.

I picked up a 100m drum of RG59 from Homebase a while back for £7. That's more than enough for any digital interconnects or playing with antennas.
