I picked up 67 and 68 from the sorting office yesterday. It feels odd that there’s only going to be one more delivery. Coleman Hawkins Wrapped Tight being listened to as I write. Lovely sax sound.
I Posted the above earlier in the listening now thread re this latest Jazz 33. Bit too polite for the music. The next issue is Ben Webster - 'Ben Webster and Associates'. I hope that is better sound wise.
I was going to order On This Night but found locally a clean 1970s Italian MCA/Impulse version for £12. Having said that its the only one I've chosen over DeAgostini.I Posted the above earlier in the listening now thread re this latest Jazz 33. Bit too polite for the music. I complained to them about 67 and 68 arriving without magazines. They just sent me second copies of 67 and 68 complete with mags... I have spares folks!!
Also 69 and 70 arrived at the same time. Lady Sings the Blues.. Nice..
Just giving Coleman Hawkins 'Wrapped Tight' a first spin.
My kind of Jazz..and a lovely 'close up' recording, but with lots of 'air'. Nice...
This one I wasn't sure for a while, listening to on Spotify, then decided to go for it. I was really glad I did as it's a really nice pressing and just sounds great. Classic talent on show.Yes is is a lovely late period Hawkins recording. Close up on Hawkins as you say, but lots of space and depth to the rest of the band. I find the best balance is at a slightly higher volume than level than the typical Jazz 33 as it seems to have been cut a lower level perhaps to stop overloading the cutter head on Hawkin's solos? This is no problem as a beautiful quiet pressing. I am then really appreciating some of the beutiful contributions by Barry Harris on piano as well as Hawkins solos.
As above I put mine in the PVC outer sleeve I put the LP in. Annoyingly the DeAgostini UK shop where the Jazz 33 back numbers are listed has been off line for months now and I wanted to get a couple of LP's I missed that either didn't up or that I had to return faulty to my Newsagent who then couldn't get a replacement.
