Cheap class D powered speakers

I want some cheap, preferably second hand, class D powered speakers. They must have energy efficient class D amplification rather than inefficient A/B amplification because they will be used off grid where the only source of power is a 12v battery with a mains inverter. The only cheap class D powered speakers which I’ve found so far are the Pioneer DM-40D and the Q Acoustics M20 speakers.

Are there any other cheap class D powered speakers which I haven’t yet considered?

Also the Q Acoustics BT3 might be suitable too but I’m not sure is these are class A/B or class D so hopefully someone could confirm this?

How about a cheap TPA3116 type amplifier, which will run happily off 12v, then your choice of speakers?

Yes that would work. I would have to find someone who could supply a ready built one though as I wouldn't know how to do it myself.

Ebay item number 265709090574 is the kinda thing I'm thinking of.

Item 225078004984 would probably be a suitable power cable.

What about a class d car amplifier that could run on 12v without the inefficiency of the inverter?
This is why I suggested the TPA3116, they will run directly off a PP3 9v battery if you don't need much power, anything from about 7-24v will work. But there are some decent car audio micro amps out there too if you need more grunt.

Bet those M20s sound better, but cheap and second hand suggests a tighter budget to me (not that blowing the potential budget out of the water with a nicer suggestion is not the done thing on forums).

M20s would be pushing the upper end of my budget but not totally out of the question. The Q Acoustics BT3 are much cheaper but I'm not sure if these are class D.

How about AVI DM5’s, these have tiny little pcb mounted amps which should be easy to run from a low power supply.
Yes they would be ideal. I actually sold a pair of DM5 speakers two years ago because I wasn't using them.

They would be a bit overkill for what I need though. I would fell guilty using a pair of really nice hifi speakers in a horse tack room. I just want something that is cheapish and ok quality would be fine incase they get dirty or damaged.

I think using a car amplifier connected directly to the 12v battery without needing an inverter would probably be the best option though.

Can anyone recomend some compact two way speakers that would be suitable to use with a car amplifier?

I would think any small 2 ways would be fine, what sort of music does the horse listen to?
LOL! :D They're for the tack room not the stables. It's like a second home from home during the summer.

They'll be used for movies and music including pop, rock, classical and electronic dance. Pretty much everythng really from bass heavy rave music to light solo classical pieces. There's no need for them to go very loud though.

My main concern is will it matter much using hifi speakers with a car amplifier?

No problem at all with compatibility, though lower impedance is sensible.

Sounds like you need a pair of the ubiquitous Mission 760i's. Sound pretty damn good for a few quid and 6 ohm.

They were my first ever speakers when I was a teenager. Cracking little things. Bloody loved 'em!

Thanks for the lower impedance is better advice. :)
