Well, it's the time of the year when lists must be made.
My 5 records of the year:
1. Rova:: Orkestrova, Electric Ascension. ROVA improve Trane. This is not easy to do.
2. John Coltrane, One Down One Up. Live at the Half Note, 1965, the best year for the classic quartet live (all the of the recordings I've heard from that year are stunning). Absurd that it took 40 years to get an official release.
3. The Fall, Fall Heads Roll. Not just nostalgia, the current incarnation of The Fall is one of the best ever.
4. Alex von Schlippenbach, Monk's Casino. All of Thelonious Monk's tunes, some in pretty radical reinterpretations. The kind of record that reveals new things every time it's played.
5. Ectrogram, Electric Deckchair. Welsh psych-pop, 2 guitars and a splendid drummer.
Reissue of the year:
Naked City, Complete Studio Recordings. One of the joys of living is that you get to hear Naked City.
Book of the year:
James Meek, The People's Act of Love. Modern reimagining of Dostoyevsky, really very good.
Film of the year:
I can't think of a film released this year that I would bother to watch a second time
