Base for Epos ES22s

The standard Epos ES22s are quite unstable on the standard floor spikes so that has me thinking that it may be an idea to extend the spacing of these spikes by making a base that screws into the existing holes but has spikes much further apart, similar to the old FB PMC range and similar to the new Epos floor standing K range.

Is this a good idea/bad idea? Has anyone done this before? Other than stability would this make an improvement to the speakers - such as tighter bass?

I am thinking at the moment to make a pair from 1" MDF and finish them in satin black, however I have other ideas which include metal plate and even granite. These ideas would obviously cost a lot more as I would have to involve specialists, would it be worth it? Again has anyone ever done this?

Thanks in advance for any help.
