ATOC5 twiddling

I'm just setting up a spare deck, a TD125/3009/ATOC5 and having sorted out that BA*D plug on the SME (they want shooting!) I have a RH channel down. Now I know it's prob the cart leads, so I'll twiddle them first, but if not is it safe to start putting a digi voltmeter/continuity tester round the leads, or am I best disconnecting the cart first in case I fry a coil? Thanks.

BTW it sounds very nice indeed, albeit only 1 channel.:)

Job done, the usual expedient of unscrewing the armboard and wiggling the cartridge connectors, then replugging that &^%*ing plug on the back of the SME arm (why is there no retaining screw?) and it's singing. I'd forgotten how bloody good a Thorens 125/SME 3009 sounds, and I'm very impressed with the ATOC5. The Dino I recently got here is singing away, it's a hell of a sound for £not much. :)
