Adagio for strings

I am not a big classical listener but every time i hear this it moves me so much. Hairs on the back of my kneck stand to attention - just like soldiers.

It is such a beautiful piece of music and perfect for the film Platoon especially in the place they put it. The BBC coverage of WW1 on breakfast this morning made me cry and reminded me i must play this piece of music and i have - made my cry for a second time.

Must start a thread on film soundtracks and music that works well with the movie.

Anybody know of any similar music to Adagio that i could hunt down ?

Hey thanks for the suggestions, i will check them out.

The little classical i do listen to tends to be on the dark side maybe what you would call sad ? I find happy jolly stuff a little annoying - maybe there is something wrong with me.

I'm not especially into classical, but when I do listen, I like the sombre, dark moving pieces (I find Adagio for Strings especially sad).

So on the basis that I'm not especially into this type of music, but like the one that you do:

Shostavovic Symphony #10

.. and see the film "Sunshine" (Danny Boyle, 2007) - it has the most marvellous soundtrack which really makes the film. Example:

.. and the film "Moon" which has a beautifully haunting soundtrack. Example:

The whole thing appears to be on YouTube:

I just listened to that version but still prefer this one:

I'm not particularly knowledgeable about how a written orchestral score should be interpreted, but am inordinately fond of the Tallis piece by VW. I believe that one's preference for a particular performance is driven by which version is heard first. In my case it was the LCO's CD on Virgin Classical. I now have a large number of different versions of the piece, but this remains my favourite.

Gustav Mahler - Adagietto from Symphony no. 5.

A fabulous piece, and a must hear if you like the Barber Adagio. Death in Venice soundtrack I believe and a perfect match.

Also have a listen to the Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2, the perfect accompaniment to the plot of Brief Encounter.

Might I also recommend English String Music, on EMI's Great Recordings series? It's Elgar and V-W, conducted by Barbirolli, with Introduction and Allegro, plus Sospiri, and R.V-W's Fantasias on Tallis and Greensleeves.
Sospiri is very reminiscent to Adagio for Strings, I thought.

Thanks to every one for the recommendations. I will surely have a lot of fun checking them all out.
