Arcam is based just outside the famous university city of Cambridge, and our story started the classic way: two friends with a passion for music and electronics met up while engineering students at Cambridge University, and founded Amplification and Recording Cambridge in 1976.

Where we came from

As the name suggests, some of the company's early work was in high-performance mixing desks for recording studios, but it wasn't long before the two were making hi-fi amplifiers, beginning an engineering-led business still innovating and making the most of music and home cinema sound almost four decades later.

In that time we've developed a huge amount of in-house expertise, not to mention plenty of unique products: in 1988 we launched the first offboard digital-to-analogue converter, or DAC, to improve the sound of CD players, and in 1999 a high-quality DAB radio tuner for use with hi-fi systems. We even developed our own Dolby S cassette deck, and built it here in the UK – the only British hi-fi company skilled (and brave!) enough to do so.

We've been developing and making CD players for almost 30 years, and for 40 years the descendants of the amplifier with which the company started in consumer electronics, and as far back as 1995 expanded into home cinema electronics, developing a world-class reputation for making some of the best-sounding AV electronics.

In home cinema we've also developed our own DVD players and, more recently, Blu-ray players from scratch here in the UK, engineering them using our decades of experience in CD players to ensure they play music as well as they do movies, delivering better all-round performance than other brands' products.

Hard-won techniques for preserving and handling the most delicate signal and reproducing music with all its subtleties, nuances and excitement intact are now in our blood. We know that as audio moves on from CD to even higher definition formats, we're determined our products should continue to serve the music faithfully and deliver maximum enjoyment to the listener.

Yes, we listen – we're a company of music-lovers, after all – but we also test and experiment in a scientifically rigorous manner. We like to say that ‘we measure what we treasure': we know that the better the engineering benchmarks we deliver the better the results we – and our customers – hear.

Bringing our expertise to you

Making equipment able to reproduce even the smallest detail captured by the studio microphones is only half the story: to make the most of that equipment, the effort we put into research and development must be matched by careful and precise installation.

That's why we at Arcam have spent many years training our dealers to appreciate the importance of a great demonstration, fully able to show off their integration, installation and calibration skills. Few people would consider installing their own house-wiring or heating – instead, we leave it to the professionals –, but when it comes to audio systems many do a spot of hi-fi DIY and fail to get the performance that they have paid for.

Arcam knows its products have the potential to thrill, but we know that achieving that aim is as much about where you buy as what you buy. Our highly-trained dealers can not only help you explore the abilities of our products, but ensure they perform to their full capability in your home.

Where we're going

Hi-fi and home cinema systems are evolving at an alarming rate, and we – and our dealers – are here to help you keep up to speed with the latest developments, and make sure you make the right decisions.

For example, many new services will let you stream millions of audio and video files, but while they're undeniably convenient, they fail to offer the sound quality you can get from CD or SACD, let alone high-resolution downloads, or match the quality of audio and video available from disc formats like Blu-ray and DVD.

The problem is that these streaming services are limited by concerns about Internet speeds, which are also holding back wider availability of high-resolution downloads. However, as speeds increase it's clear real high definition content will be increasingly available at a premium.

Whatever future technology appears on the market we're confident we can engineer systems that get the absolute best reproduction from whatever format is available.

For almost 20 years – half our history – we've been as much about home cinema as hi-fi. And while we're excited by the promise of higher resolution 4K TV screens and projectors – isn't everyone? – better pictures are only half of the story. Few people get to hear a proper surround-sound demonstration in a quiet room where they can really listen: instead they're settling for mediocre sound from soundbars as a simple solution.

Yes, soundbars are undeniably convenient, and better-sounding than TV speakers, but they're a pale imitation of what a proper system – whether stereo or surround – can deliver from your favourite TV programmes or movies.

We at Arcam want you to experience the real thing for yourself. That's why we've embraced developments we believe give real pleasure to music lovers, and are developing products and systems to make people stop what they're doing and get lost in the magic only the best-sounding music and movie systems can deliver.

However, while we're committed to great sound, we're not the kind of highbrow, high-end company that's divorced from the real world. Yes, we get excited about pushing the boundaries of what's possible in our top-of-the-line systems – but we're even more enthusiastic about applying what we learn from these high-end products to more affordable solutions.

We want people to enjoy music from a whole variety of sources while they work, travel or play, and wherever they want to listen – our motto is ‘Better sound for more people'.

To achieve that, we make systems and products that provide the maximum enjoyment of music, whether it's streamed over Bluetooth from a smartphone or that favourite high definition concert video played for the twentieth time.

We've shown that no-nonsense engineering can work wonders when it comes to bringing music and movies to life: now we're delivering ever more ways to do that for a fast-changing entertainment world, and developing new products to make the most of whatever the future may bring.

Arcam’s A49 integrated amplifier represents the pinnacle of Arcam’s audio engineering. We set out to incorporate everything we have learnt in almost 40 years to deliver an amplifier that will set new standards and provide class leading sound quality for the best possible reproduction of your music.

Drawing on the many years of amplifier design experience at Arcam, the A49 uses the best quality components and engineering practice to produce a product that will give many years of musical pleasure and reliable service.

With a class G amplifier, toroidal based power supply, acoustically damped chassis, paralleled transistor output stages and exceptionally low levels of distortion and noise the A49 is capable of reproducing music with all its original authority and detail. The A49 features dual mono volume controls and a balanced signal path all the way though the product together with distortion nulling input multiplexers. Rest assured you will be hearing the music just as the artist intended.

The A49 has been designed to leapfrog the competition with a massive 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 400 into 4 ohms. It delivers 50 watts in pure class A mode while allowing for huge extra power reserves from our latest generation class G topology that is both clever and efficient. During normal operation, distortion is measured in less than one part per million so that this massive power is deliver with total control and finesse.

There have been great strides made in improving audio sources and loudspeakers in recent years and the time is right to match them in the field of amplifier design. This ground breaking amplifier is a must audition amplifier for music lovers who understand that power is nothing without control.

366_large.jpg

The UDP411 embraces movie and music playback, offering outstanding performance in both disciplines. Unlike most BluRay machines music from SACDs and CDs is delivered with outstanding quality while movie performance with either 2D or 3D films is to the very highest standards currently available. Using Arcam’s unique and hard won engineering expertise the UDP411 delivers a truly emotional portrayal of your favourite discs, delivering blockbuster experiences straight to your arm chair.

Few specialist manufactures have ever stepped up to the plate where development of video playback is concerned. The technological know-how required for the successful design of high performance video sources is vast. With more than ten years of digital video experience, not to mention global recognition of its efforts, Arcam is proud to announce the arrival of it’s newest disc player, the UDP411.

The UDP411 embraces movie and music playback, offering outstanding performance in both disciplines. Unlike most Blu-Ray machines music from SACD & CD is delivered with outstanding quality while movie performance with either 2D or 3D films is to the very highest standards currently available. Using Arcam’s unique and hard won engineering expertise the UDP411 delivers a truly emotional portrayal of your favourite discs, delivering blockbuster experiences straight to your arm chair.

The UDP411 uses a very simple, almost direct video path from the disc to its ultra-high precision outputs. This short path approach allows pictures to be presented without unintentional artefacts and delivers the kind of pristine picture quality that will truly captivate any viewer. Using broadcast quality digital video clocks during processing means the resulting picture quality is simply stunning.

To ensure the UDP411’s music performance meets the same “reference” standards the class leading TI/Burr Brown PCM1794 digital to analogue converter (DAC) is used. This device, coupled with a linear phase Bessel output filter and high precision re-clocking system results in audio quality comparable to a dedicated audiophile CD player. Even the UDP411’s power supply has been specially designed for outright performance. Discreet sub-regulated power supplies on the drive, audio and DAC boards deliver significant benefits to the overall performance of each element and thus allow each section to work truly independently and without interference.

Featuring some of the latest thinking in high performance amplifier design, the A19 uses components and techniques mormally found in Arcam's top of the range products. The amplifier's design and performance have been refined and tuned to an exquisite degree. This focus on sound quality has led to an intellegent power supply design that also enables the amplifier to offer a flexible upgrade path. The power section of the A19 is design to be able to supply two of Arcam's class-leading r-Series products in addition to its main duties. This allows the A19 to become a digital hub for a whole range of digital connection upgrades that includes both wireless Bluetooth® devices and USB sources.

While the world of music is increasingly a digital one, analogue sources are not forgotten. The continued popularity of vinyl has led Arcam to to equip the A19 with a new ultra-low noise moving magnet (MM) phono stage that allows the music enthusiast to enjoy their vinyl collection afresh. While the use of high performance headphones has grown dramatically of late, little effort has been made to improve the headphone sections of the amplifiers that drive them. The A19 addresses this by employing a completely new circuit that can deliver a level of sound quality that will thrill even the most demanding listener.

The A19 is built to the same very high standards as the company's other FMJ series products. Arcam engineers have chosen every critical component using careful measurement and years of design experience. These audiophile grade components are designed into a circuit layout configuration that has been carefully optimised for the very best performance. The A19's audio circuits are combined with an ultra-low noise power supply built around a muscular toroidal transformer. These state-of-the-art electronics are encased in a resonance damped chassis which exudes quality and perfectly matches the psound quality of this outstanding Arcam amplifier.

The A19 is designed in the UK and available in a discrete black finish.

301_large.jpg

302_large.jpg

303_large.jpg

As one of the very few audio specialists in the world to design AV receivers, Arcam has developed a reputation for balancing a finely honed technical specification with world class audio performance. The AVR750 is, quite simply, the highest performing AV receiver Arcam has ever made

Offering a level of sound quality that is far above competing receivers, the AVR750 is an audiophile product by any measure. Equally at home with high resolution surround sound or two-channel music, the AVR750 delivers stunning realism with everything from heavy-weight blockbusters to your favourite concert video.

The power amplifiers within the AVR750 are perhaps the finest ever seen within any AV receiver. Power delivery is both clean and tight against a background noise level that is astoundingly low. Listeners can expect to be enthralled from the opening sequence to the final encore!

The AVR750's natural habitat is within high performance cinema installations. It is comfortable driving any loudspeaker to extremely high levels and delivers a sonic detail and emotional connection that quickly takes listeners to the very heart of the movie or music.

Both video and audio stages are designed to embrace both current and upcoming technologies. 4K "Ultra HD" and 3D video capability are built in, while both standard and high definition sources can be scaled to any resolution where required.

An internal tuner provides a fully integrated FM / DAB / DAB+ (in appropriate markets) radio solution. Worldwide access to radio stations is provided through the network connection, which also interfaces to uPnP audio servers. The USB port supports memory devices as well as digital audio from your iPod® / iPhone® / iPad®.

Control of the AVR750 is possible via Ethernet, enabling it to be fully integrated with whole house control systems. RS232, 12V triggers and standard IR control are also included.
