Thanks for everyone's comments. An Update. Mains back on now. AC Voltage now 244V.
There is a hum coming from the speakers.
So - goes like this ....
Grid Supply at 263V - Hum
Grid Supply at 253V - Hum
Transformer Supply at 235V - No Hum
Grid Supply at 244V - Hum.
Tempting to say that...
OK - I think the point is that, in this experiment, one thing has changed. That is the incoming supply, from the Grid to a massive Generator supplying around 6 properties. So, the change is VERY likely to be due to this change. One characteristic of this change is that the Voltage has...
Hi all,
The reason for the Addendum was to make sure that people who have humming amps aren't unnecessarily spending time and money on exotic solutions IF the problem is the mains and to challenge the idea that ......
"No such thing as "dirty mains" in that context. It will be an earth loop or...
ADDENDUM !!
"It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good" .........
The recent storms have destroyed the grid connections to our valley so we're on bloody enormous generators. And guess what ......
There is no longer any mains hum from my amps. Silent. Marvellous. So I can listen to music...
I guess getting another pair of Kytes is not a bad idea.
However, if the Royd Eden is similar but better, I might as well try a pair. I read the reviews of the Tukan and and I'm probably a sucker for that mid bass warm sound these days. It's not for the main system (which might end up getting...
Thanks for all the suggestions - I'd forgotten all about Royds - I'll check them out. The Eden seems like a good replacement size wise so I'll keep my eyes open. Hadn't thought of Linn Tukans - I check those too. Are they Kan-like to listen to? I found the Kans good at lots of stuff but not...
Tragically, my Kytes are on their way out. They are old and abused and have started to distort slightly. I could try to replace the drivers, but not too sure what's going on with them and could end up replacing at least one mid bass driver and maybe a tweeter.
So, having paid £50 for them...
Hi again Cereal Killer,
Been here for around 5 years, but we have rebuilt the place and I've only recently dug the HiFi out in anger and tried to sit and listen to it. I was looking forward to it but it's just too noisy to have on in the room when music isn't playing. The home office...
OK - just read a bit more and SMPS seems to be the spawn of the devil for power amps DOH!.
So I guess the question is actually - Does anyone have experience of changing amplifiers to remove mains hum (through the speakers), or know which technology might be the least likely to react poorly to...
I'm just in my "new" office at home and thought I'd rig up a little music system. Squeezebox Touch into Project Amp (D Class), Rega Kytes. And with no music playing ITS REALLY NOISY ................
I think I'm resigned to not being able to sort this out, as I'm not going to buy isolation...
Thanks Ivelin, thanks Firedog.
Great that it all works in reducing "casing" hum - I might have a go with either the ATL or Humdinger options, but having had an e-mail chat with ATL , he doesn't have anything to eliminate the problem I describe - suggests getting isolation transformers.
The...
Actually the mains seem to be more like 253V here ........... And all RCD/MCB protected and all signed off in the last few months by my electrician, who advised on what to measure and how. What specifically is it that concerns you Arkless?
OK SO results of the Ivelin test
PN continuously cycling between 251 - 253V
PE continuously cycling between 251 - 253V
NE 1.3 to 1.5V
In terms of DC over the PN then we have continuously cycling between plus 0.1V and minus 0.1V. that's if the multimeter really reads DC (when DC is selected)...
