Come to Norfolk they said - driest county in England they said!

It snowed during the week at our place in the Cairngorms.

Rega Isis / Osiris Balanced XLR Balanced Interconnect

Just in general and specifically today with my Krell amp.

How many pieces of kit do you have lying around awaiting repair or refurb?

Another one to add to my extensive list - a Cyrus Straighline amp that's not working properly on one channel. Shame as to test it I'd even managed to locate some of those BFA banana plugs that it needs.

Rega Isis / Osiris Balanced XLR Balanced Interconnect

I've done some testing of XLR vi RCA with my kit and initially the XLR sounds more dynamic until I realised it was because it was much louder. Once you adjust the volume to the same sound level I couldn't really notice a difference. I've got a DAC connecting via XLR to my amp just now and in...

Old and new Mini next to each other

I don't remember mine as being particularly bad to drive (and I used to get to drive lots of cars in those days as I helped in my uncle's garage during the holidays) other than needing care not to spin it, as when the back came out it wasn't easy to catch. I think I only actually spun mine once...

Today I have mainly been v3

I've managed not to go into my office so far this year, although I was under pressure to go down to London for a few days last week and under pressure again to go some meetings in our Manchester office next week. Anyway today (along with working from home) I'm been playing around with various...

Why guilt on speaker cables and such

I'm not as up on the latest Naim stuff but back when I was using their kit it was just a case of using NACA5 for the speaker cables and whatever SNAIC's you needed to wire the rest up.

Old and new Mini next to each other

I was about 18 and paid £130 quid for it (which was all I could afford in those days anyway), so had no complaints! It was much better than the Mini I had before it anyway. All the cars my mates had were equally shit as well - clapped out rusty Mini's, low end Escorts and Fiestas etc.

Old and new Mini next to each other

Mine was plain white and pretty much looked like this. Can't recall if it was an Estelle or a Super Estelle.

Why guilt on speaker cables and such

It was one of the things I liked about Naim - not having any concerns about what cables to use. Of course it didn't stop me investing in a Chord Company Solid cable to try although it wasn't much more expensive than the standard ones (and didn't make a noticeable difference). I don't worry...

What does it mean to you to be English?

I thought it was more that England went begging to Scotland for a King when they didn't have one themselves in 1603. I'm half English and half Scottish and have lived in both countries so not really sure what I think. There are far fewer scumbag racist/facist Tories in Scotland though, which is...

    The next 007

I'd have liked to see Idris Elba in the role but sadly he's too old now. Tom Hiddleston maybe?

    Vexed by Valves

I've not had great experience with valve kit so far and it's noticeable that every valve component I've ever bought is up the loft at the moment - either 'cause it's blown up (including my lovely sounding by temperamental Oto) or because I wasn't keen on the sound (the latter being a couple of...

The End of My DAC Journey?

So far I've stayed at the cheaper end of the DAC pool. My first DAC was a Meridian 203 which was ok but I preferred the internal DAC in the Micromega Leader 2 CD player I had at the time. I think that Meridian is the only DAC I've sold - I've still got all the others (and found 3 spare ones when...

    Nostalgia

This thread has got me digging various bits of kit out of the loft and checking to see if they still work and how they sound. Today it's a Cambridge Audio DacMagic 2 that's probably been up there unused for a decade at least. I've got it rigged up and using its balanced outputs for the first...
