Speaker Power Amp Requirements and Suggestion

I run my LS3/5As (power handling 15w "speech and music") with a NAIM NAP250 - 80wpc. Never had an issue if you're sensible.

Supernait 4 in the offing (or will it be 5?)

Same in the US. 20% off all old classic stuff. Not all dealers are offering this - some are still trying to screw full price for this (about to be discontinued) stuff.

The Wam Show is dead - Long Live the Maverick Hifi Enthusiasts Show

WAM..... Down and out! Maverick..... Too restrictive. HiFiKabin...... Friendly and got some of the WAM guys but definitely not as many. PinkFish...... Friendly and see some of the WAM guys here but, again, not as many.

    BBC "License" for LS3/5a

Surprising gear Combinations. Good or Bad ?

At the opposite end of the spectrum, many advise against powering LS3/5As with more than a few tube watts. I've used mine with 80-100 watt solid state amplifiers for over 40 years - anything less just lacked something. Yes, you need to be a little careful with that volume control but the...

    BBC "License" for LS3/5a

Here in the US, it doesn't matter......... we ditched the Queen's English 250 years ago!!!

    Dynatron LS3034 Speakers

The LS3034 speakers looked a bit like Goodmans/Whafedale speakers of the day, mostly to the grill material/color and the recessed wood front trim. The speaker complements were totally different, though. My uncle had a pair back (WAY back) in the day so I got to peek back there. This was...

Audio Technica VM760 SLC - Some thoughts

After 40+ years with mid-high end LOMCs (Linn, Lyra) I finally gave up trying to cue those exposed cantilevers without a disastrous outcome. I "downgraded" to an AT VM760SLC (primarily to have the option of a replaceable stylus) and couldn't be happier. At first I missed some of the mid-high...

    B&O are at it again...

What a joke. They no longer have a clue how to make a decent HiFi system so they retread an old one. Pretty much like the film industry with sequel after sequel of previous successes!

    Small speakers for loft room

Depending on the size of your room and taste in music, LS3/5As?

    Most impactful LP12 related upgrades

That's weird. You have an early R/C power supply for the LP12, shouldn't make a noise like that but I cant think what else it could be Do you have the system grounded correctly?

    BBC "License" for LS3/5a

I think that's the key - it's a trademark/copywrite licensing fee, rather than a patent licensing fee. These last longer (I think copywrites are 70 years and trademarks have to be renewed every 10 years). But yes, the BBC has to agree to license the trademark/copywrite and this hopefully would...

    BBC "License" for LS3/5a

I see all the discussions about bona fide "licenses" from the BBC to build LS3/5a speakers. My understanding is that when a company applies for a patent on a product, and that patent is granted, no one can produce a product that conforms to the patented product without obtained a license for...

    Ariston/Linn: contested History

I don't think we'll ever know the real story about the RD11/LP12 as only one of the principals is still alive. Knowing the Linn culture and personalities and having discussed and bought my first real HiFi component from Hamish (Thermac) in early 1970, I'm inclined to believe the Ariston side of...

Previously happy LP12 owners who moved on.....

I wouldn't worry too much about spare parts remaining available for the LP12. Linn has amortized its development costs for the LP12 many times over (as, probably, have you). It's pure profit for them now and we all know how much Linn likes profits!!!
