There are different oils for the different bearings.
You can pick it up on ebay easily and cheaply. I think I recently paid less than £5 posted for a 30ml vial.
The look of the component is laregley irrelevant providing it does the job it is tasked to do.
What does matter to me, aesthetically speaking, is how everything is arranged and housed.

The primary cause is typically poor chassis grounding. The internal earth that fixes to the sub chassis is probably loose or has a poor connection due to the paint not being scraped off properly.

Media blasting would be the best option - especially for a fluted design. You can choose a soft grade medium to protect the wood as much as possible. There's a whole range of oils out there so retreating would be a doddle.
