Six week ownership report incoming…
So I picked up my 1.5 2015 ND Sport Nav from a non-Mazda dealer in Bristol in early April. So far, this little car has really exceeded my expectations. Because it’s usable as a daily, it means you simply get to enjoy it more.
Highlights:
The LED lights - they are AWESOME!
The gear shift and engine are both an absolute joy; the engine just loves to rev and the raspy engine note is reminiscent of British 60’s sportscars.
Handling wise; the suspension setup is soft but it carves down a country road with real composure (like an Elise, unlike a TVR!), which I think is a sign of a great chassis. You feel that lack of weight, it translates into an agile chassis with an excellent balance and great turn-in. It really does put a smile on your face and at low speeds too.
The roof! OMG, when you are used to allen keys to remove a soft top, the ND design is a revelation.
The aircon and heating are both fantastic. Compared to Lotus and TVR’s, it’s quite a revelation!
I personally love the look of the car, especially the front end and side view. Rear is ok, but I felt the same with my NA that I had years ago (that cost £800!). Interior looks quality too.
I love the ergonomics, the heater controls are a joy to use, the design of the steering wheels controls, brilliant (not cluttered) and the control stalks are superb too. The iDrive style controls (my other daily being a BMW) are excellent.
The view from the drivers seat is great; I love to see the bonnet and wings on a sports car.
MPG. Well what can I say? A near average of 50mpg just adds to the cars affordability.
Downsides. Yep there are definitely a few:
The touchscreen locking when driving is seriously annoying. We have two other cars with touchscreens and neither of them lock, nor do any of the hybrids and EV’s I have at work. Not sure of the logic as I’m far more likely to have an accident by constantly twirling a knob to access my music.
Seats could be more comfy and more adjustable but I can live with them. They are a long way off the comfort of my BMW MSport ones.
Mazda should have thought a little more about storage. They could have fitted some door storage and even Lotus managed a shelf area under the dash and coin trays each side of the car.
I’ve already mentioned the wondering steering, but it’s no big deal, the steering does lack feel compared to the finest.
It’s not quick, which means I don’t overtake when I would with other cars.
Issues, now and in future:
I have experienced the crap window regulators, but that was easy enough to sort. Gearbox so far is fine, but that obviously needs to be nurtured. I realise the underside should be looked at sometime but thankfully the authority on rust protection, Anand Viad is near to my workplace.
In summary:
Overall, it’s been a great ownership experience so far. I’m still very tempted to get another Lotus (V6 Exige or maybe an Evora 400) but I think I’ll be keeping this little car too when the time comes!
