Ikea kitchens

Cookers/ovens/hobs have been discussed here before, but I do not recall Ikea units getting a mention.

Before the question, I will repeat that my Smeg stand-alone, dual fuel, was NOT worth the money, or even remotely close..................

I was in Ikea a week or two back and happened to notice, not sure why, the cooking appliances. What is visible in the dispalys looks rather "industrial", but to be actually built with the use in mind, rather than fashion; in other words, they might actually last!!!

Anyone used/using any? Verdicts? Comments?

Just don't.

Just don't.

Just don't.

Currently have an ongoing complaint re kitchen bought from them - I paid for quartz tops, units, integrated electricals, and installation. Kitchen is not finished. Wasting many hours on calls to try to get any kind of an update or timescales. Utterly useless. The different departments do not deal with each other and they are all palming me off to each other. In the meantime I still do not have a completed kitchen.

I raised a complaint, but apparently they don't even investigate a complaint until the end of the kitchen install.

Frankly a ridiculous process. And a ridiculous company. I regret spending so much money there. I've spent nearly £14k in last six months all in.

I could not recommend IKEA at all.

As for the units. Yeah good. Service utter shite.

My pal built an Ikea kitchen years ago. He reckoned the carcases were made from thicker chipboard than the competition. It certainly looked good and lasted well. Mind you, so did the MFI one that my dad and I installed. The difference is often down to the installation quality. Hear in mind that my dad is ex RAF engineering and he doesn't believe in working to the nearest thousandth of an inch if with a little effort you could actually get it right.

I installed an Ikea kitchen around 30 years ago and it's still going strong. Some of the finish on the doors around the handles has worn away but only cosmetic damage. The units themselves seem unaffected by the passage of time. I can't comment on whether the current range are as built to last as mine but if I had to start again I'd probably use them.

Edit: I don’t use their appliances though.

We built ours about 15 years ago. Still going strong and in cosmetically good shape. They do seem to have decent quality carcasses and fittings.

Terrible kitchens personally I’d go for Howden’s and buy the appliances separately their appliances are shite but they’re cheap if that’s your thing.

Howdens are trade only, surely?

No but you have to open an account and put up with them bugging the living daylights out of you for the next five years.

Really good kitchens though best out there IMO unless you go bespoke and then you’re talking thousands more for a not much better kitchen.

Once you open an account they will send someone out to do a proper drawing which you use to order the kitchen well that’s what they used to do, I think they used to ‘charge’ for the survey and drawing but you get it back off the kitchen price.

We put in a Howden’s kitchen back in 2011 and it’s as still as good as new plus you can usually get bits from them years down the line we’ve replace all of the built in appliances at least twice some appliances have been replaced three times.

I've built a couple of Ikea kitchens, and these have worked well. My office desk is actually Ikea units with a wide bit of their worktop on top, and this has also worked well. I've no experience with their appliances though, i'd guess it's best to avoid them and use an electrical retailer that you trust (that's what we've done in the past).

I guess it'll depend on how handy you are, whether you expect to do things yourself or get trade in to sort out any problems.

This is just going to be a thread where people recommend what they bought, so I’ll do the same.. I looked at all the suppliers and compared quality and cost for all. I ended up getting a Leicht kitchen - the quality is a step above any of the English kitchens, but the price was the same. I found a local specialist that designed it all, one person from beginning to end and it’s been a pleasure.

I bought my appliances myself, they didn’t mind, I bought my quartz worktops myself, again they didn’t mind.

Look into it, you might be surprised.

if all you’re after are appliances, look at Bosch and Siemens for quality.

I bought an IKEA dishwasher in a sale for £100 10 years ago.
Turned out to be a rebadged Hotpoint.
Still faultless.

I believe their appliances are all rebadged Whirlpool now.

IKEA reasonable for the price but needs to fit exactly because they are not going to fix anything. Sure they are rebadged.
^^ Bosch and Siemens are better than average. Top is Gaggenau, Miele from Germany, or Viking from USA.

To answer the OP's question re. appliances I have installed three Ikea kitchens in my partner's rental properties and each time have used their appliances (dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge, freezer). So far all three properties have been problem free re. the kitchens apart from the second one I installed in 2018 where the fan went in the oven in 2021. Called Ikea and was repaired under warranty within 4 days. The appliances all work properly and are well designed, I chose mid range ones like the Anratta and the Rengora. The cheaper ones look just as well made so I suspect just have less features. I am sure there are better out there at greater expense, but these all represent good value for money in my opinion.

Just a note re. the Ikea kitchens and the Metod range in particular, I find them well thought out and easy to build/install with a lot of flexibility and the ability to customise where needed. The high points for me are the rail mount system, the door and drawer mechanisms and the range of 'in cupboard/drawer' accessories. The low points are the lack of a service void behind the cabinets and the plinth system can be fiddly, but these are minor annoyances in reality. I much prefer them to Howdens whose units I find a bit low rent and the range somewhat restrictive, they also don't seem to have the best customer service in my experience although I am going back 8 years now to the last one I did.

yes did some repairs on elderly Ikea kitchen last year . Ok , just nothing is standard . its all ikea or nothing . At least with Wickes , B&Q , Howdens then a hinge will fit any cupboard door . personally i like Howdens seem to last well . Last kitchen i did was B&q which was Ok . Strangely our own kitchen is at least 35 years old and came from MFI , you remember them ?? :) solid oak , very old fashioned but its doesn`t delaminate like these modern things
