Matthew - what I find surprising is that about 15 pages ago (!) you mentioned that changing low level signal cables had an audibly positive effect.
The Great Gods of Truth at ASR wound laugh at what was clearly to them an unscientific assessment (yours) of a change which could not be explained by the science.
And yet you heard it.
So why does someone need to provide à rationale for mains cables to you? Why not do what it is apparent you do very well (hence the subject header) I.e. listen for yourself with an open mind, and trust your ears.

I also said that I attributed the improvement to the resolution of an electrical fault or incompatibility present with the old cables (probably the interconnects - I neglected to mention that they'd originally been purchased from Tandy in about 1990!)
I upgraded the cables again and heard no improvement, even though I really wanted to (because they were expensive, even when bought used).
