Zoom, Skype or what?

On Tuesday I’ll be doing some remote teaching (on Macs). I’ve not done this before. Do folks think Zoom is the way to go? It’ll basically be an informal chat and lecture, some show and tell and practical demonstration. Tips and advice much appreciated.

We have Microsoft Teams for work, which is superb for the current everyone WFH situation.

I understand that a free version exists. Might be worth looking at (though I confess to having zero experience of that option).

Zoom and Teams have the best set of features. My company organised a quiz night after work last night. 60 people on a central Zoom meeting with the quiz master. Split into teams which used Slack to message and confer. After each round of questions we were automatically redirected into a per-team Zoom breakout meeting to discuss and finalise answers, and after five minutes automatically recalled to the main Zoom meeting with a countdown timer. Even as an IT bod, I was impressed with the slickness of that!

I've used Zoom for the past year and a half on a course which has students from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and the UK. It's not complicated and quite high quality.

The usage of Zoom worldwide has gone up by something like 533% because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Trolls are zoombombing and inserting things like porn films into meetings. I haven't seen anything like that yet, but Zoom allows you to set up a password,

It is also being used by organizations like NA and AA. There has been the occasional idiot in a 12-Step meeting who wants to take charge and won't shut up. They can, however, be muted and then shown out of the virtual door.

wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

Had a meeting ( work -social ) on Teams tonight. Only the 4 most recent talkers appeared on screen and the initials of other participants shown below. Is there a way of having more than 4 images on screen for Teams? ( I've googled but to no avail )

Circuit or WebEx only in my life/business world... others are compromised from a security perspective

Our company Zoom has enabled a 'new to us' feature. When you join a meeting you are placed in a 'waiting room'. When the Host joins the meeting they are in full control of who enters the meeting proper. By this means it should avoid any meeting being 'attended' or 'hijacked' by strangers.

Elsewhere someone was asking about the 4 video faces on Teams. As far as I know, what that experience shows is correct - you can only see the most recent 4 speakers.

Thanks. I think I'll try Zoom. Most students are female so porn might be slightly embarrassing but probably more interesting than my class.

Not being smug but a quick speedtest shows 340Mbps my end and I can do good lighting.

Just did a test. Jeez I look old, not a little sick and slightly pissed. I avoid mirrors so might always look like this but I need wardrobe and makeup.
