Zener Mod

Jonathan,

I think that the answe is that they are equivalent. One Zener is limiting the voltage on the positive half of the AC waveform and the other zener is essentially a short circuit. On the opposite half of the waveform the roles are reversed. So in one circuit version the upper zener is limiting the voltage, while on the other the lower is active, for a particular direction of current flow.

What intrigues me is where the 90 degrees out of phase voltage is generated.

Please be careful. It is difficult to know with this circuit just what voltage any part of it might have wrt the ground you are standing on!

David,

Thanks, it makes sense now.

I've been staring at the valhalla scheme for a while and I can't make heads or tails of it!
