WMA files

Being of the boomer generation and listening mainly to LPs and CDs I've not done much audio downloading (though a fair bit of streaming). However, a while ago I bought a couple of albums in what I assumed were WAV (described as CD quality) format and they turned out to be WMV. On several devices I've had problems playing these, so
a) are all WMV audio files the same format (i.e. is there more than one type of WMV) and
b) can I convert WMV to e.g. WAV or FLAC without having to use a lot of dodgy software?

I think WMV is a 'lossy' format so I doubt there'd be much point in converting to WAV or FLAC which are both lossless.
Foobar (in my experience) can convert just about anything but there is quite a steep learning curve.
