Is there some use friendly site/lists about th myriad of JBLs out there. It's hard to know where to begin.

There is the everything-about-JBL forum:

http://www.audioheritage.org

But I haven't seen any actual ranking of models and, as everywhere else, everybody has their own view on what's good and bad. But one can allways throw out a 'Is Lxxx any good?' question and get some answers.

My personal favourite, of the ones I've actually heard, is the 1970's top of the line home model, L300.

You basically need to decide whether you want to go with their "studio monitor" series or their "domestic" series.

For Studio monitors, the 44xx series from the 80's is a good place to start.

For Domestic, I like the xxTi series from the 80's.

If you are prepared to source gear from Germany, France, etc. you will generally find it is cheaper than it would be in the USA. I have seen some great gear on German eBay go for less than half what it would fetch in the States.

Apropos the studio range would anyone know of a local (UK or Europe) source for the variable resistors, aka L-Pads, used in these?
Thanks
John

What model is it?

The UK JBL parts supplier is Select TV in Bristol.

They seem to be able to get anything (comes via Harmon in France).
