What's your WTF hifi moment

Not much in hifi shocks me. I have heard small sound huge, expensive things sound terrible, things I thought would cost the earth be reasonable and things that I thought be cheap cost way more than.

This morning I had one of my very few WTF moments when I came across this

Now I showed my wife and she just said do you get lots of them for that price.

£4200 for a fuse. I nearly fell over when I seen the first fuse for £50.

What are your WTF hifi moments. Can be anything.

 

That's crazy. Mine are cables that cost more than a mid-luxury car. $71k for a pair of gold speaker cables anyone?

 

Not sure I'd trust myself with a quantum science fuse. I'd probably put it in back to front and cause the universe to stop.

 

Err, thing is: Who’s going to buy them?

 

I bet it’s directional. So it’ll be 50/50 whether it sounds better or worse. Ah well, its only money.

 

Mine was the discovery that people like to remove the upper bearing “bridge” from SME V arms and think this is an improvement.

 

Twice as much speaker cable which obviously lowers resistance improves sound. Who would have thought it.

BUT then realising that some amps prefer to play with a stronger load on the mosfets, hence some amps sound better with more resistive cables.

And so begins the cable debate.

Rather like tonearm mass and cartridge weight, I believe that the cable debate could be ended with simple maths..

In fact the item description even states as fact that fuses are directional.

 

Are you aware of a shop called Halfords?

 

My worry would be that I'd put it down, and then not be sure exactly where to find it.

 

If you only sell one or two, it doesn't matter. One or two deluded loonies, bingo.

 

I said over on PH that it's the perfect cover for money laundering. 50p fuse 'sold' for £4,200 - dirty money goes in, clean money comes out.

 

Vat deductable too - very clearly marked.

 

Hearing a rega planar 2 at a party before I knew that the turntable was important in 1980, it was a total revelation and I bought a rega soon after.

Absolutely, and listened to by someone who has just invested 4 big ones and is going to feel really, really stupid if they make no difference.
