What was the design philosophy behind this speaker

I've always thought most modern speakers try to squeeze too large a driver in the cabinet, but this is pushing that view to the limit.
 
I keep going back to this. What the hell is the point? Why did he build only one? Why would you want to use only one? What is inside the case, just empty space?

Not exactly the same, but when I was ( very ) young I fitted a drive unit into a large box.
The innovative side of this was the drive unit ‘fired’ into the box.
I sat inside and listened to the Beach Boys’ song ‘Good Vibrations.’

...and the fact that most of his "space" seems to be currently occupied by a giant speaker cabinet.

It has potential, though - Could make a very nice garden shed (with built in audio)
