"Volume Control - Hearing in a Deafening World" book by David Owen

Julian
I first thought I would post this in "Off Topic" but then I realized it is very much about the Audio side of things and how we are able ( or not ) to listen.

I have just finished reading his book on hearing and it well worth it for an insight into how our ears work and why they don't. There are also some fascinating insights and realities for those who have tinnitus ( which my wife has ) and for the reasons why hearing aids cost so much. Unlike vision glasses, hearing aids, at least in the USA ,are still classified as medical devices and need to be obtained through an audiologist. How much of the hearing aid industry is complicit in keeping high prices and preventing new upstarts from entering the market.

He also talks about the development of the "Ear Machine" software and how it was eventually bought by Bose for inclusion in their "Hearphone" range.

You can hear David talking about the book here on NPR Radio.

I got the e-book version out from free from my local library.

David has written for many publications including the New Yorker and his style is very read-able. Just the right balance of science and knowledge.
You can download many of his other short articles from his webpages here:

Some of them go back a few decades but I also recommend his pieces on donating your body to medical science and on life in the mud ring - touring circus.

The lesson for us all is - Take care of those ears.......
