Vinyl - old and original or new and remastered?

I don’t know if it’s an economical purchase nowadays, but the 40th anniversary “Ziggy” (which came with an audio DVD) is well thought of, IIRC; I certainly like mine, even though I have a (scratched to death) early pressing as well.

The 40th Ziggy is the one exception to the original-Bowie-only rule, since they mastered it properly, using the original tapes and engineer (Ken Scott). Such a shame they didn't do the same for the rest of the 70s catalogue.

I've also had some joy with 12" David.
Golden Years
Sound and Vision (B side of an 808 State remix).
Fashion
Ashes to Ashes.
All pretty cheap from the Bay.

An old pic of my stash, there’s a fair few more now (TND, Blackstar, two RSD live albums, Lazarus etc). I’m just missing that mid-period on vinyl, i.e. between Lets Dance and The Next Day.

Classic Led Zep are all excellent , just wish i bought the $750 new box set at the time as these fetch $6,000 + these days
44 disc 45rpm

Theo and Tony's posts above make important points; on the one hand, there are some great modern reissues (frequently involving Kevin Gray). On the other hand, 70s Orange RCA Bowie are hugely better than any reissues, and a key reason for owning a record player.

There are exceptions to the Bowie orange RCA's such as the 1997 Hunk Dory reissue I have mentioned. The 40th Anniversay issue of Ziggy is also as good or better than an original. There are no rules only generalisims.

I agree with taking each album as an individual case.

In an ideal world, original copies and a newer pressing would be easy to get hold of and comparisons a doddle.
The recent Kate Bush remasters are good but different enough from the originals to be worth pursuing both versions (especially for the obsessive types, of which I guess I am, a bit.)
I have most of the Bowies I want on orange uk rca, and a few of the recentish remasters, don't regret getting any of them.

You've not read my post #22, it seems.

I played 'Tonight' last week, then I remembered the reason I rarely play it. Most of it stinks. Not a bad recording though. I bet that some of us took a 'Bowie break' after Tonight appeared.

Yes, me too. I never bought it. My mistake was not returning at 1. Outside, which is a very good album IMO. That period right through to Blackstar has some good material, though much is brickwalked when it comes to CD mastering. It wasn’t until the V&A Bowie exhibition and The Next Day (both excellent) that I jumped back onboard. I back-catalogued the 1. Outside to Hours period with the CD box set, but I’m still missing a lot of the ‘80s stuff (which may be wise).

I know it has been a while, but I have still barely listened to The Next Day and Blackstar. Emotionally hard work, but love them.

I have worn out a couple of Bowie first presses. I replaced Young Americans with RCA -PL8099 (1984 RE) and all good.

Not sure if I could find replacements for Lodger/Scary Monsters/Station to Station if required, luckily mine are in really good nick.

I always thought Hunky Dory/Ziggy originals did not sound as good as other stuff of the time.

Why? I am agreeing with you and reinforcing my point earlier on Hunky Dory.

Oh, I see. Apologies. I must admit I don't know the '97 Hunky Dory but will try and find a copy. That is the album I've had most problems finding a pressing I'm satisfied with, and in good condition.

Not tried the Bowie Century 100, though I have the Kate Bush and preferred it to an early UK copy. Not all are winners though, I felt the Sinatra Songs For Swinging Lovers was nowhere near my early original UK copy.

Labels that use orginal tapes , quality mastering , plating & pressing will have a sticker.

Best bitter also has a sticker though. Nothing ever has a sticker saying less than best.

I bought a MOFI pressing of Little Feat which is abysmal compared with my original.

Here are a some reissues that the consensus would indiacate are better than the originals and the 'go to' versions. There are many more but these are a few for starters:

The horse has bolted on many of these but if you are an ABBA fan and despair at how bad most of their records sound, as unlikley as it sounds you should grab this Readers Digest set from 1982 before the word really spreads and prices go silly:
