Victor VC2002 signal generator

Anyone used one of these? I bought one about 8-9 years ago for occasional use but in last couple of weeks it has become unreliable. When pressing the select button (to select frequency range) it "stalls" as though stuck in select mode and won't either begin producing a signal or progress up through to the next range by pressing the select button again. Pressing reset works, but again if you press select, it freezes again. I have re-soldered most of the display board as well as some dodgy looking soldering on the main board (3-pin regs and big psu caps) which all scope out OK. Every time I have done some soldering and put it back together, it works OK for 5 mins, or an hour, or on last attempt 2-3 hrs but will spontaneously freeze again. Looks like it could be faulty comms between the display driver chip and the motherboard, but not sure where to look next. Ribbon cable? (I have re-soldered both sockets for this). Any other ideas? Lots of 10uF electros, could these have dried out?
Thx,
AP
