The very same Steve Baker who heads the ‘ERG’, an unelected covertly-financed far-right political insurgency operating at the very heart of government. Exactly the sort of corrupt entity we need a good speaker to protect us all from.
Yes, agreed. But not sure glancaster was making a pro SB point. More a case of if even SB can be complimentary, where the hell does that leave those on the Tory bench who failed to pay respect to an established parliamentarian?

Sorry, I wasn’t assigning any slant to gancaster, just gagging on the sheer hypocrisy of someone so fundamentally anti-democratic and corrupt as Baker burping up semi-platitudes towards a Speaker he so clearly hated.

Yes, absolutely. But Hell Fire, doesn’t it throw those Conservatives who remained seated and sullen into very deep dark contrast?

Yes, it must be that Steve Baker, unless there are two in the Commons.

The job of the speaker is to oversee debates, and enforce the rules of the House in a non-partisan way.

BTW Grieve in parliament now is absolutely ripping the government a new one, albeit in a very lawerly manner. Has more or less accused Johnson of lying to the Queen (while stressing he was of course suggesting no such thing).

Jailed EDL founder Yaxley-Lennon has said he supports Johnson. This amounts to one far-right c*** supporting another. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...OuHrdXc23lEB3i3pxrUAuT84iK-MXyrg7Iv2RrQLRKSH8

Tory MP Dominic Grieve has started a debate on prorogation and yellowhammer in Parliament. He has said unless things are done carefully, the country could be moving towards a revolution. There is a slide by the government, he thinks, towards not obeying the law and conventions.

My guess is if Johnson and Cummings decide not to follow the law resulting from the Benn-Brexit bill, there will be serious disturbance in the streets. Johnson's government has a majority of minus 43.

He probably wants to convert Bercow. It’s one of the aims of religious fundamentalists of his stripe.

It's for a humble address to the queen for the release of all the documentation, and relevant communication, including emails.

Leaning towards rationality more like. This is no longer about Conservative vs Labour et. Al.
Erm, no. The Speaker has to remain neutral no matter how nazi or how stalinist the sides are, these are the rules. Democracy is a hot topic on pfm lately, that’s also part of it. Now if the situation requires a Bercow to intervene in favour of [whomever] in order to save a situation from becoming totally uncontrollable, then I suppose the system itself is flawed.

About the current events at the House of Commons, I don’t know if I should call it a bad joke or just bad. About the House itself, it might have rather good acoustics so why not auction the benches off for a good cause and make a proper sounding concert hall (missing in London since the demolition of Kingsway Hall). And finally build a decent half-circle parliament building like all true democracies have had log ago.

the post-war consensus.
’Post war’ was 70 years ago, and not necessarily an easier time than today.

To a Brexiteer, anyone who is not Pro is a branded a traitor. That’s where we are. There is no neutrality. Rules don’t seem to matter anymore.

The ‘post war consensus’ is a thing not a time period.

Disappointed to see a largely empty HoC for the Grieve amendment. This one really needs to pass as it will help expose government lies and also flush out the real predictions (e.g. Yelowhammer) as to what Brexit will cost us. I’ll be hugely disappointed if any Labour, Lib Dem, SNP etc MPs don’t show up for the vote. The stuff this would flush out could be hugely damaging to Brexit and help things move-on even with the HoC shut down for weeks by Johnson’s far-right bully-boy tactics.

Can’t agree there.
If they chose to leave - tough.

You're right of course, Gav, though only for the first 15 years as an ex-pat. The logic seems to be that after 15 years, your interest in the old country is evidently diminished, so you're not entitled to the franchise. I think it is hard, nay impossible to apply the same logic to a referendum which may have the effect of making your very existence in your chosen place open to considerable doubt.

So it’s through.

I suspect Johnson will ignore it. They’ll claim ‘human rights violations’ even though Cummings already demanded pretty much the same thing from the SPAD he marched out under police escort.
