Unreliable switches

When I bought my Myford lathe in 1974 I didn`t want to pay the extra for the switch unit and anyway I don`t like the drum type switch they offered.

Wanting to get going quickly I knocked up a control unit using an old diecast box and a 4 pole centre off toggle switch to give forward and reverse for the motor as well as centre off for safety. I then used an octal based mains relay and a couple of pushbutton switches to provide pushbutton run / stop control. All parts were just bits I found lying around.

It was only intended to be temporary but well....

A couple of years ago the toggle switch packed up and I had to actually buy a new one. Today the stop button stuck stopped and I luckily managed to dismantle it and effect a repair.

47 years seems a poor lifetime for bits that were just gash anyway, where can you get quality switches these (or those) days?
