Tone Poet Blue Notes

I’ve just very quickly skipped through it and I think I like it, so will likely take a punt. I think I liked the first track the least, which is unusual for a Blue Note. The larger ensemble works well, the massed brass weighty and interesting, some of it having the feel of a very cool film noir soundtrack to my mind. Bit of a Herbie Hancock feel in parts too. I think I’d grow to like this one.

The Freddie Hubbard is another wonderful sounding TP but not necessarily as essential as some. Prefer the 3 cuts with the second line up (Mobley et al)

Enjoying Slow Drag now. I actually reckon Sonny Red outshines Donald Byrd on this. Another top class TP.

Spinning Slow Drag for the first time this afternoon, and am pretty much in awe of the sonics. Apparently it was recorded at a time when Rudy had perfected his recording setup, so it may have had a head start, but the Tone Poet brings out an astonishing level of clarity and detail. I've streamed this at least a half dozen times over the last few months and haven't heard the nuances I'm hearing now...and almost didn’t go through with my order…Higgins' vocals pop on title track and his dampening kick drum is clearer than ever on "Jelly Roll" plus Cedar Wilson on “The Loner” really catches my ear ….Certainly glad I picked this one up

Definitely tempted by the Tyner.

Same here - it's one of the few ( or the only?) TPs that is also in the Cook / Morton core collection list

There's a bit more of an overlap with the BN classics.

I've currently got Sonny Clark's My Conception on repeats stream vis Qobuz. I passed over on this when it was released but am now really enjoying it. Might need to find a copy.

There was a message on the Blue Note Instagram account that some TPs are now available on a second pressing. All Seeing Eye, One Flight Up and The Cooker were mentioned.

I cracked on Tyner. £32 something on Music Magpie’s eBay shop at the moment with the 15% discount:
