Tinnitus

Yes, differentiating quieter speech from scenes with background music (which becomes more foreground) is hardest. Some sound engineers on TV programs should have their ar5es kicked TBH

Agree totally-I think a lot of mine came from working in the steel industry for 20 years before H&S became paramount - a forge mill is not exactly quiet.
Especially with the s--t sound quality of most flat panel TV's.

I’ve had tinnitus for years and the last few it has become much worse in my left ear, so much that I sold all my hifi due to no longer being able to enjoy it.

That's sad, I am really sorry to hear that; I don't know what I would do without music in my life. I have tinnitus too, due to clubbing in my younger days and series of noisy industrial jobs. I do a lot of driving in my job, and I find the level of road noise to be uncomfortable. I have an issue of distortion in my left ear too. It's manageable and TBH, given the amount of abuse I have subjected to my ears, I'm in a much better place than I have any right to expect! My brother is quite deaf. He wears two hearing aids and in giving him support, I have come to realise how poor hearing care is in some parts of the country. Recently, his hearing aids have stopped working. I accompanied him to the hearing centre and we were told that his ears were full of wax, but despite him having NHS hearing aids, he was told that it would be £70 for wax removal, and that the person who does it is only available on Thursdays! Apparently, they are not allowed to refer a patient to the hospital, they can only refer to the GP, who in turn will refer him to the hospital. They can't adjust the hearing aid until the wax is out and in the meantime, he is almost totally deaf!

I don´t know how pertinent this is but shouldn´t people who are taking stuff for cardio problems consult with their docs before happily taking Gingko Biloba ? Something about reaction with anti/coagulants ? Just in case I´ll give it a miss ´cos I take pills for hypertension. I don´t really suffer from Tinnitus - I just have audio cataracts as it were, in one of my lugs. Thank God for the Balance control

I have a good friend who has slightly impaired hearing, tinnitus and an awful earwax problem. He needed his ears vacuumed out every two to three months to have even half decent hearing. That now costs him £120 a time (for both ears) and needless to say it doesn't happen as he is far from well off. His tinnitus gets progressively worse as this ears block up and he gets very depressed as you can imagine.

Will this be the next Tory scandal - The Great Ear Wax Con.

Does anyone who bought these have any feedback on them? I bought some and it's taken mine down from an average level of 6/10 to 3/10.
Of course, there could be a lot of other factors there but it'll be interesting to hear others' experiences.
I'd agree 6/10 to 3/10. It's only really when I think about I notice it now. I mentioned the Lindens tablets as they were cheap enough to give a go. I might try some more expensive ones just to see if I get below 3/10.

That is terrible. I'm sure that most people are totally unaware of the problems that partially deaf people have. What make it worse is that my brother is physically disabled too, so hearing problems are yet another issue that he has to deal with.

hahahahaha....only on PFM can ear wax be politicised :)

CBD oil has been working for my tinnitus. Lots of info on the web.
There are many different causes for tinnitus. Usually a combination of things as opposed to a single causal factor.
With my tinnitus, anxiety/stress is a factor. The CBD oil greatly reduces my anxiety, and as a result, my tinnitus.
YMMV...
I got some CBD oil, but it turns out I can't take it regularly due to taking blood pressure medication. Essentially, if you're not supposed to drink grapefruit juice, you're not supposed to take CBD oil. It's the same liver chemistry, apparently.

So I've taken it carefully and occasionally, and not really noticed a difference. But I don't think I have elevated anxiety, so maybe that's why it hasn't done much for me.

Are these the ones?

My ENT specialist suggested this as he suffered with tinnitus following a nasty car crash many years ago. He went through 2 years of number 11 on the dial, entire ear/head tinnitus as I have been for the last 9 months since an infection/broken eardrum. He has made an appointment for Tinnitus retraining for me?? His tapered off after 2 years & he had to have brain surgery after his accident so I will always hold out hope. My quiet day out of 5 today, utter bliss. When it's like this, even though it lasts for one day, it is still hard to believe how bad it gets.

Good luck with your treatment. I hope it gives you some relief.

Got the ginkgo biloba tablets and been on them about 2 weeks, but not fully in the habit yet (missing about 1 in 3, thought these were supposed to help with memory ;)). Will report when been on them longer.
Best,

I've just come across a free app on Android called Tinnitus Notched Tunes. It uses something called notch therapy to play music with frequency of your tinnitus removed. There's thousands of free web radio stations included, or you can play your own music. There's some scientific basis for this, might be worth a go.

When I visit the audiologist, tinnitus sound therapy is on the agenda. First thing is to check how sound is reaching the cochlea then how the brain is receiving the signal. I have little to no loss of hearing so something else is going on.

My appointment has been put back for 5 weeks as I was hoping to report back on Monday.

Yes normally tinnitus is linked to hearing loss and the brain tries to re-create the frequency you should have heard .
1 in 4 have tinnitus of some degree , unless there is a cause that can be rectified the next best thing is to help yourself , tiredness , stress , smoking , alcohol , sugar , salt , medication are all major factors in making the condition worse . I have it in my head constantly and it's got worse with age , I never have a quiet day , I can't mask it out as it is always above what I hear , tuning out is the best method , esaier said than done of course.
