The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

I bought a Daniel Wellington jobbie in the sale in John Lewis a few years ago when I wanted a simple, inexpensive watch. Slightly over your budget but perhaps something like this:

The weird thing about that watch is that I would automatically start telling the time backwards without thinking

Retail for pre-war Rolex chronos seems to start at around £15k. Similar watches by other Swiss manufacturers like Tissot, Universal etc are nearer £2k. I think cronos from this period are stunning - though I'm conscious early movements were never as robust as modern watches even when new so there's always the prospect of a costly service/repair round the corner. It would definitely be a 'weekend watch' only if I had one.

There are some nice similar early Longines around that aren't too expensive. Always intrigues me that equal quality early watches, some like Rolex cost a fortune but others like Longines not too much.

For example

It should indeed be a "weekend only" watch. My mother was bought a gold Rotary for her 21st, which would have been about 1965. She has worn it a good deal since then but by no means daily, and had it repaired as necessary, on some occasions spending more than the thing was worth in order to keep it working. It has now been declared beyond repair, which is a shame. They are mechanical devices and like all mechanical devices they can be repaired, but at some point parts are no longer available and any repair would become a very specialist affair.

Website says it's a Japanese quartz movement but I've no idea as to the quality. Mine is still running, several years on, but I hardly use it.

As long as you’re happy.

Just a warning to any potential purchasers. Chap bought a fake DW from Ali Express for £30 and it was identical to the real thing at £150.

Except they aren't. The minute markers are different, so is the minute hand.
I bought a fake Orient Bambino on AilExpress or similar. It's pretty close too. But it's not a perfect copy.

Very minor differences. They’re made in the same factory in China. Just like some Sennheiser headphones. Here’s another video (there are loads):

I quite like their "Retro Quartz Tuxedo" model except for my pet hate of a NATO strap!
I've popped the question for an alternate strap as it would make a nice every day watch.

That's very nice, I like that. I do like the "small seconds" design, it's out of fashion now but was very much "in" in the 40s 50s and 60s. It has conventional lugs, you can fit any strap you like to it.

I did not know what, exactly, a NATO strap is so I Googled and found out, with all its supposed military history. But I distinctly remember one summer during seaside holidays going with my grandfather to a watchmaker where he (grandfather) had the leather band taken off his watch and a canvas band put on. Explaining that he always did this in summer. It was probably 1958 - 1960 and I was between 7 and 9 years old. I can't swear that the canvas passed under the back of the case, but it would have made sense because of sweating.

My brain has gone weird. I’m seeing that as a Somon watch now. Back to my Xelor.

I don't know Somon watch ,
Nomos are a Germany company known for Bauhaus design watches plus they make there own in house movements
