The watch thread: pocket, wrist, sporty, showy? You name it!

Those who can't stand a sad story look away now!
How much would similar but in good original condition be worth?

Looking for some advice... I have an Omega De Ville Quartz watch that was my father's. It's probably from around the late '70s and I think it's stainless steel, with a stainless steel bracelet. As you can see it's worn but I like it, it's plain and not too big and of course it has sentimental value. (Cue Pulp Fiction...)
It goes OK but I can't work out how to adjust the minute hand to put it right. I think it's something to do with pressing a small button in the middle of the crown as suggested at https://www.vintagetimewatches.com/watch/33996/de-ville-cal-1342/- I can press in the button but not turn the crown after. Anyone know about these watches?

I cant access the link - but what happens if you pull the crown out to the first or second position and rotate it in either direction ?

Pulling the crown out adjusts the hour hand. There is only "in" and one "out" position. I tried to push in the central button with the crown out but this pushes the crown back in.

It looks like you have to press the button in for four seconds to adjust the minutes.

Thanks Paul. That seems right and it works for advancing the second hand but not the minute hand. I need to wind it on about 35 mins so just doing the second hand isn't practical. Maybe I need to get it Looked At.

Alternatively - just wait until close to the time it's currently showing on the minute hand, set the hour hand correctly and you're good to go :)

A bodge, I know, but effective.

Hope this is considered reasonable etiquette!

I’ve bought a couple of Nite watches now, and love the design and quality. They’ve a referral thing that gives £50 off if anyone is interested? This link should do that, and of course as the referrer I’d get discount points too.

My latest acquisition from them:

Not bad. Reminds me of my Christopher Ward Trident.

Too bigey for me, but pilot's watches are/were meant to be easily legible at a quick glance.
This isn't really a pilot's watch, though. Designs like this, Bell and Ross are another, are slightly frowned upon in aviating circles, because they imitate the look of an altimeter but the scale is different (the altimeter has 10 gradations round the outside where the watch has 12) and, at a critical moment, the potential confusion could cause one to misread the altimeter. The likelihood may be small, but it's about not building in a potential cause of human error.

I think the kindest thing to say about AVI-8 watches is that they are 'inspired' by pilots watches.

I'd look at Laco and Stowa but different price point of course ...

I was more concerned about the movement. Yes, it ain’t a true pilots watch, but I like the style, and I don’t fly :)
Sure if you like the style just go for it. I think I would have preferred accuracy of a quartz movement to a cheapo automatic at that price but I found this info which is somewhat encouraging ...

< The Type 300 employs a custom modified Japanese made, 21 Jewels movement based on the robustly reliable Miyota 8 series movement. >
