Lets, assuming you like idea, make a series of virtual mix tapes to show off our iimpeccable taste to the world. That is:

-- One post per song
-- Loosely connected in some themed manner like genre, personel , etc.
-- After a decent number of tracks switch genres and start a new tape (as it were)
-- Feel fee to add commentary, descriptions, links etc.
-- Generally liberally interpret the whole idea as a way of talking about the songs we love enough to want to stick em on a C90 and send them to that chick/dude in Psych 101.

Matthew

To kick off, how about:

Theme : Post Punk
Track : Gang of Four "Damaged Goods"

Best bass line evah.

.. then listen to "The Mayor of Simpleton" just once, you will love the song for ever. Even my missus likes this, but then she's a girly, lyrics person. Great harmonies. Then listen to more XTC but the one for the tape is "mayor...".

Nice one Matt.

Theme: Post-Punk
Track: Ex Models: the birth of disneyland (off of "Other Mathematics")

Ex Models are the closest thing today to Gang of Four.

Theme: Post Punk

Track Fugazi: ex-spectator off The Argument - ex in the title! Lots of noise! Great drum riff! Agit prop lyrics!

Kevin

Theme: Post-Punk
Track: Killing Joke - Eighties

Do you think Nirvana might have heard this one?

Dan

In fact, to follow on, why not, as a transition...

Theme: Grunge
Track: Nirvana - Come as you are

if it's cheating to double post, then disregard this post.

Theme: Post-punk/grunge*

Track: "Movement" (LCD Soundsystem)

[* I have no idea what constitutes either post-punk or grunge]

Theme: Grunge
Track: Husker Dü - Reoccurring Dreams

(why fill a tape up with lots of little tracks when there are really good big ones available)

Tony..

Theme: Grunge
Track: Soundgarden- Full On Kevin's Mom

This was my introduction to the flannel movement, first heard in a friend of a friend's dormroom at Syracuse.

Theme: Dunno, probably grungy in a non-grunge sort of way.
Track: Three Days by Jane's Addiction

Awesome in every respect, everyone must hear this track off the album ritual de lo habitual.

Unless you don't like it in which case it's rubbish...

It ain't all about Seattle...

Theme: Grunge
Track: Primus - My name is Mud

IIRC, I saw them open for Janes Addiction at the Brixton Academy,
(1991'ish) though I could be completely wrong about that.

Genre: 80's underground

Track: Meat Puppets: Look at the Rain

<desperate attempt to link Primus back up with dance-punk>

Genre: 80's underground
Track: fIREHOSE - Chemical Wire

Another great live gig - I still have the set list I snagged off
the stage.

Pffft. I saw them 6x. IIRC I also saw Sausage. ;)

Not at all Dan ol' bean! It's just funny to think that I saw them so many times, and haven't listened to their music in 10 years!

PS- I'm referring to Primus, not Jane's Addiction. Though I saw Pornos for Pyros at "Woodstock" '94.

Me neither! I had to check if that Primus track was on the
Reality Bites OST, because it would have been immediately DQ'd.
