They were excellent, a personal highlight of mine. You really can't go wrong with the above set.

Here's a few of my favourite songs, I think from different albums for each tune, and I'd probably make a different list depending on the day.

Fire in Cairo
A Forest
Lullaby
The Figurehead
The Funeral Party
Just Like Heaven
Inbetween Days
Shake Dog Shake
High

Depends what sort of thing you like. The set list has 7 tracks from one of their darker albums, but then the encore was where most of the pop hits were.

My favourite period is from the mid 80s, with the more fleshed-out sound. For sheer variation you could do worse than have a listen to Kiss Me... from 1987.

I do keep thinking I need to reassess my status as a Cure fan. I got bored after three songs last night and switched off, and looking at the set list there's probably only Disintegration I would include in a set list I'd want to see/hear. The gig at Hammersmith a few years back I found really boring, yet the live stream they did recently playing Disintegration front to back and then some more stuff was superb.

I think the best gig of theirs I've been to was one of a string at Olympia in the early 90s, where they opened with The Kiss and proceeded to do probably the darkest set possible.

For me, the austerity and somber stuff of the early The Cure hits home every time...

All Cats are Grey (from Faith)
Other Voices - (again from Faith has probably the best bass line in post-punk)
Play For Today (from Seventeen Seconds)
Killing an Arab — (Three Imaginary Boys) probably problematic these days if you don’t know the literature origins of the work... Their first single and very strong too... and proves what you can do with just a toy drum kit (those cymbals!), a bass player and a guitar drenched in reverb.

But I like the poppy stuff too... all the singles: line ‘em up end to end and I’d be just as happy. Glasto was a real wake-up to see them before it’s too late.

Try the Standing On A Beach compilation from 1986, but for me they’re an album band which I’d recommend as follows...

Disintegration - (their Opus)
The Head On The Door - (Most Accessible)
Pornography - (most aggressive)
17 seconds - (finding their sound)
Faith - (fabulously gloomy)

Just my point of view, they’re a multi facceted band and I lean towards the darker material.

If you buy 'Faith' get the deluxe version for the epic live version of the title track that was the b-side to the 12" of 'Charlotte Sometimes'.

You can't go wrong with any Cure album up to 'Disintegration', except perhaps for 'The Top' which I've never got on with probably because it's a Robert Smith solo album in all but name. That said, the safest bet would be 'Staring at the Sea' or the 'Bestival Live 2011' set.

If I had one Cure album I had to save, it would probably be 'Concert'. 'A Forest' on that is a real stoater, disappearing in a cloud of phaser and distortion. It's also the only place 'Charlotte Sometimes' can be heard and it doesn't sound like it's a third gen tape copy.

I just wish they'd reissue 'In Orange' on DVD / CD.

You could also go to the cinema on July 11th to see their Hyde Park anniversary show from last year shot by Tim Pope.
