On a bit of a revolutionary spree at the moment, last night It was Giordano : Andea Chenier

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B007SAP79O/?tag=pinkfishmedia-21

This recording got a qualified good review in the September 1964 Gramophone magazine which coincidentally had a rave review for the Leevers Rich E242 tape machine....

Probably Tosca tomorrow night, to keep up the revolutionary vibe.

Chopin Concerto No.1. Mauricio Pollini, Kletzski, Philharmonia HMV LP 1960. I’ve had this for 35years and was blown away the first time I heard it. I watched a recording of Pollini perform it with Thieliemann and the BPO on their Digital Concert Hall last night, nearly 60 years after he he recorded this aged 18 after winning the Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Rubinstein told the other judges “he played that better than any of us could”.
My biggest regret is not getting to here him live, given his age and scarcity of performances.

Just listened to two more Chopin Concerto No 1’s following Pollini: Rubinstein then Perahia live,

Chopin: Piano Concertos https://amzn.eu/d/4vraG1W

Chopin: Piano Concertos 1 & 2 https://amzn.eu/d/eBXiXxn

Pollini is close in style to Rubinstein, dry and reserved. Perhaps why Rubinstein pushed for Pollini to get the prize in Warsaw? Benedetti Michelangeli who trained Pollini, told him playing wasn’t about his emotions but Chopin’s. Perahia live performance goes in the opposite direction- technically as good but far more gushy, matched by Mehta’s conducting with the IPO. The orchestral playing is also fantastic- must have been quite a concert.
