Technics SL-1200 Mk1. What's going on here?!

Yup, looks that way. I'm guessing sold by someone not familiar with TTs, and unable to look at the diagram on the box...
 
Messaged him/her and got a reply. Seems they didn't realise and have had several messages putting them right.

So can we presume that "tested and works great", just means that it revolves?

The Linn LP12 that I bought in 1974 had one of those plugs. They were meant to be plugged into power outlets on your amp.
