TDL Reference Monitors

Always loved the look of those
Read somewhere a while back they don't sound too good.
Would love to hear them

Much competition in that price range, be very lucky to sell for even half that. Weight, collection only, needle buyer in a humongous haystack. One would already have to know their deep innermost charms methinks. Another one for the ‘watch list’ slag heap.
Could be wrong :D

How not to sell £1500 speakers that don't sound great. Lots of bass, just all slow and TL like.

It just go show how people have different tastes. I absolutely love my TLS80s and my TDL Studio 4s are close. The Studio 4s are as near as you could get to one half of the TDL Refs.

James, did you get sorted with a sub? I have one here which may or may not need a repair. It’s not the one you were after but it’s free if you’re interested.

I had TDL Studio 4 as well.

Not found a Velodyne yet. What sub is it?

It's an old Venture. It was working fine until my mate changed his amp and then he said it stopped working. The indicator light still came on so I checked the psu and that was still giving good output and I just left it at that. It's clogging up my office and I've no use for it so it has to go.

The TDL RS’s are more often than not sold away from EBay, I have a pair of the non ‘M’ model which have a different crossover and mid range speaker. In excellent condition 3.5k to 4.5k is about right. I have a part of the non ‘M’ version and have to disagree with James regarding the sound but then I would. I know a specialist who returns them using NOS or remanufactured parts

Sorry, had to leave my post unfinished and it appears to have posted itself in my absence. Mine are replicas using all the appropriate speakers NOS or refurbished, serviced but original crossovers but the cabinets are slightly larger in height and have wool wadding. Side by side to the original spec and I had the choice to buy either, the replicants seem to have slightly tighter bass and a better soundstage. I suppose you either love or hate them a bit like Briks and Kans.

I’ve listened to the Ref’s a few times and I’d dearly love to own a pair but my rose tinted glasses are just not that rosy I’m afraid.

That's where I'm at too. I loved my IMF RSPM IV's but I can't justify a pair of Ref's @ £5K

At half that price might struggle to resist though.

I haven't had the privilege of hearing the TDLs but as an all-round speaker I think the big IMF TLs are great and very tough to beat for the money. I still have my TLS80 mk2 and RSPM mk4, I haven't used them in my main system for years as they're too cumbersome to manoeuvre but I can't bear to let them go!...

These are likely overpriced but still appear to be good VFM compared to the TDL Refs in the OP:

I had rtl2 then studio 0.5 in early nineties , studio was a fantastically engaging, foot tappin, trouser flapping, riot, bit coarse up top occasionally but I loved them. Used with big rotel power amps and Sansui 919 and pioneer m73. Needed space, smooth warmish amps, and home made bass traps.
