James Sugden

The company was founded by James Edward Sugden in 1967, a division of Research Electronics. Research Electronics manufactured scientific instruments and test equipment, designed by James Sugden, for Universities. The A21 was the first amplifier to be put into production and was originally branded for a well known local loudspeaker company called Richard Allan.

A21 Pure Class A

1ba66a_fb06a17d29cb4265a5ea6830e036bf66.jpg

The A21 was the worlds’ first production pure class A transistor amplifier and a great success.

The partnership with Richard Allan was short lived and within a year the amplifier was renamed the SUGDEN A21. Shortly afterwards, manufacturing was moved to larger premises in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire.

Almost all the manufacturing processes were carried out at the new Sugden factory. These included cases, building circuit boards and final assembly of each item all by hand. The Cleckheaton factory saw the development of many new products including the A48 integrated amplifier and C51/P51 pre and power amplifier. There were also three analogue radio tuners and a full set of audio test equipment.

1981-Present

In 1981 production was relocated to our current factory in Heckmondwike, a short distance from where it all began. Today we still manufacture in the same tradition with each Sugden product being handmade by a single highly skilled team member. Six employees have been with the company for over thirty years enjoying a life-long career. Our involvement in the full manufacturing process still exists from design to despatch. We operate our own custom engineering shop and assembly, screen printing and a cabinet making facility for loudspeakers. Sugden products are a truly handmade quality British product.

At the heart of every Sugden amplifier sits a mains transformer. The job of the transformer in simple terms is to receive the mains voltage and change it to provide power to various parts of the amplifier circuit with the required voltage and current. The transformer is probably the most important component in an amplifier because of the job it has to do. This is especially true in Sugden Class A amplifiers as they are running at full load all the time. All Sugden transformers are custom made to our exact specification and built for reliability, longevity and low noise.

The Sugden Grande power amplifiers are now supplied in custom flight cases, these are handmade for us and guaranteed to protect the product in transit. Superbly constructed from heavy plywood with extruded edges, they also have wheels to make moving them a lot easier. Something we particularly like is that the company that makes them are only a two minute walk from the Sugden factory in Heckmondwike.

Product Spotlight: Masterclass FPA-4 Power Amplifier

22219686_1046558578813198_9049732347851855016_o.jpg

The FPA-4 is considered by many of our customers as the baby gem in the Sugden Masterclass Series. At almost half the price of the SPA-4 it offers an excellent value to performance ratio. The design is based on the A21 output stage but has been heavily upgraded with a comparator and correction circuit. This controls and corrects errors that can occur in the power stage due to varying loads, to match the output of the high impedance input amplifier. In sonic terms this means the FPA-4 is capable of retaining its sound characteristics right up to maximum output without any noticeable compression or strain.

Sudgen Audio's new ANV-50 integrated amplifier

In 1967 Sugden released the world’s first solid state pure class A amplifier, the A21. The ANV-50 promises to revisit this golden age of British audio engineering, with a design focused on the demands and preferences of today’s audio enthusiast and music lover.

The ANV-50 has at its heart, the purest class A amplifier Sugden Audio has ever produced and this is coupled to an advanced ‘ideal’ final output stage. This unique two stage amplification system guarantees our signature pure class A sound, with the ability to drive most loudspeaker systems.

The sophisticated final output stage features a comparator and correction circuit so that errors which could occur in the power output section due to varying loads and distortion, are corrected to match the output of the high impedance input amplifier. Whilst maintaining the signal authenticity, it also increases the load stability and forces the output impedance to zero. This special output stage with Sugden Error Correction has extremely low open loop output impedance with a resultant high damping factor at quite high frequencies. It also benefits from overall Current-Feedback.

The power amplifier and pre-amplifier are fully DC coupled so there are no capacitors in the signal path to interfere with or deteriorate the sound quality. One of the key features of Sugden Class A amplifiers is the power supply. Because they have a high standing current and power reserves, the output is always ready to act instantly to any signal. This is unlike a conventional Class AB amplifier that waits to receive power through a transformer and a bridge rectifier. The ANV-50 takes this one step further by using a 1 MHz switching power supply which acts instantly to deliver the power as the Pure Class A amplifier section is always on.

The power supplies are high current, fast and incredibly stable. With a MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) of 100 years they are designed for longevity and reliability.

As the ANV-50 is an integrated amplifier it has an internal pre-amplifier, developed specifically for this amplifier. The circuit is a line drive design and uses the minimum number of components, all of which are high quality. This provides a very open and natural sound and demonstrates that when carefully engineered, less can be more.

When the ANV-50 does not receive an input signal it has a very low power consumption of only 20 Watts, making it extremely efficient. As the heat sinks are mounted internally with minimum contact to the outer case it only runs slightly warm to the touch.

Loudspeaker matching with the ANV-50 should never be a problem. With an output of 50 Watts into 8 Ohms that can double in to lower impedances, room size and loudspeaker sensitivity becomes less of an issue so a much larger range of loudspeakers can be enjoyed.

Critical Components -

One such critical component used in the Masterclass ANV-50 integrated amplifier is an inductor in the output stage. These are manufactured at the Sugden factory and must be made to an exact specification. Using a lathe and custom tool, we get perfect results every time.

Sugden Audio's new ANV-50 integrated amplifier

The Masterclass ANV-50 power output module is a unique design with high current capabilities. Because there is no current limiting it can drive a 1 Ohm load with a flat frequency response from 10Hz – 100 kHz. The power supplies have short circuit protection and no electrolytic capacitors to degrade over time.

Sugden Audio’s new Masterclass ANV-50 amplifier is at Musicraft (Derby)

Renaissens reviews Sugden Audio's new Masterclass ANV-50 integrated amplifier -

https://translate.google.com/transl.../263-le-test-de-l-amplificateur-sugden-anv-50

"This type of newer installation is commonly called "switching power supply" or SMPS."

"Its big positive point is that the transformer remains very modest size and that its realization will be easy. The rest of the diet is however more complex and requires stronger expertise; this is precisely the pattern chosen by the Sugden team for feeding the ANV-50 and it's a first at Sugden."

"In the diagram, we find here the diode bridge and the filter stage which are upstream, this time. After these stages, a DC voltage of approximately 320 V is obtained."

"The whole game consists in supplying from this DC voltage a square signal to the primary winding of the transformer. The frequency generally found on this type of power supply. varies between 60 and 120 kHz. There are oscillators (PWM) that "spin" at 200 kHz on the best amps. Sugden designed for the ANV-50 a 1MHz oscillator! We can therefore expect an unusual current capacity."

"The ANV-50 is fast as lightning and restores a wider sound spectrum especially in the bass. It also highlights a lot of details ...."

"With the ANV-50 we are immersed very quickly in the music. This experience is similar to that of the concert as the readability is great. What depth, what fullness. We stopped after 13 good minutes, because we had to ... We could have gone on for a very long time ..."

"The ANV-50 offers a remarkable operating silence and a micro-dynamic omni present that are to fall! Bravo!"

"With our entire drivetrain ANV-50 no phenomenon of this kind. The contours are incredibly sharp, no pumping phenomenon, the percussions are restored with a natural, a level and a variety amazing. Congratulations again!"

"By developing this unique cutting-edge power supply, Sugden's engineers bring new possibilities to the A-Class."

"It will be perfectly in place on many speakers including large speakers particularly greedy current. We were especially amazed by his musical follow-up and of course by his extraordinary speed."

Renaissens reviews Sugden Audio's new Masterclass ANV-50 integrated amplifier

The Masterclass ANV-50 is an all new design with unique circuitry. As it is an integrated amplifier, it has a pre-amplifier and two power amplifiers. The pre-amplifier circuit has been designed to use a minimum number of high quality components and is developed from Sugden Audio's flagship pre-amplifier the Sapphire DAP-800.
