Suez Canal Blocked

Blown off course by a gust of wind? Really? That sounds like an excuse issued on the instructions of their insurance company.

They have opened up part of the original canal as a bypass but presumably a lot of current shipping will not fit.

Strange that a canal has sandbanks at all

Paint up the tanks in desert drab and get them down there! We can blast it out of the way! Global Britain

One way of causing some havoc/grief to some economies, sure certain countries in the region are taking note too. Economic blockades?

Good to know that the world economy is in such good shape that the price of oil has risen on this news.

There does appear to be a surprising lack of bank protection.

So it seems it was the bank, not a sand bank........................ which makes more sense.

There was a very interesting discussion about the incident and the "ditch in a desert" on R4 this afternoon, possibly World at One, including contributions from people who know what is what about what has gone on.

Last thing yesterday they were discussing lightening the ship so that it rode higher in the water, and would likely almost free itself. But, it has 20.000 containers on board stacked some unfeasibly large distance above water level, so getting suitable crane to it, and operating from sand...........

Might be possible with a helicopter? Not sure of the maximum lift of any helicopter but don't heavy military units lift tanks?
