Stax & Marantz problem

I'm trying to connect my Stax earspeaker energiser to my Marantz receiver, and can't seem to get the two to play nice. I'm using the CDR record out phono sockets on the Marantz to connect to one of the Stax inputs, but can only get a very faint sound in the headphones from the source as selected on the receiver. I've swapped leads & it made no difference. I've swapped inputs on the Stax, same deal. I've tried a CD player direct into the Stax & it works perfectly. Can anyone shed some light?

Are your CDR out sockets variable? i.e. controlled by the receiver volume control.

No - they are line level record sockets. The faint sound heard in the phones doesn't increase or decrease in sound in line with the amp volume control.
