Squeezebox plays everything from laptop?

Do these devices play whatever audio my laptop is outputting? CD, streams from Internet, mixes from recording software, music players, Skype conversations etc

It plays files of many various types, after scanning to catalogue them. So no, it doesn't simply latch itself to the audio output of a computer elsewhere.

But it can play internet radio, internet streams and several music streaming services (such as Spotify premium, Qubuz) directly via plugins.

strictly speaking the Squeezeboxes just play whatever is streamed to them from software on your PC or software on the internet

Yeah it's implemented with server-side software, the device being a thin client. This software doesn't simply hook into the audio output of the host computer, as queried in the OP.

No, the standard method is to install Logitech Media Server on a PC on the network. The SB gets internet radio streams via this software.

Also, standard practice is to nominate a folder on the PC that the SB will playback from - this is the Music Folder, and the SB will playback from this folder .

You can set the SBT up to play back from a USB drive, but if it's set up to do this, it won't read from a folder on the PC and vice versa.
