I have recently bought an SPU cart and SME arm and am suffering from bad mains hum. Substituting the SPU for a Denon 103 cart fitted on a SME headshell cures the problem. Switching the TT off has no effect on the hum level, the same goes for moving the arm across the TT with it rotating. I have checked the connections inside the cartridge and these are OK and the resistance of each coil is around 5 ohms measured at the phono amp end of the attached cable (the cart is the Silver Mister version).
Any ideas on the reason for this, my TT set up is normally hum free?
