Yip, it's fugly and totally unnecessary.

It would look rather nice if you cut the bottom half off with a bandsaw. I suspect it is potentially an exceptional deck for the money. Sony made amazing kit in this era, some of the best build quality around.

I had one in a Sony plinth with a Sony PUA7 arm, nothing special in my view. I was quite disappointed tbh.
