  1. Things you need to know about the new ‘Conversations’ PM system:

    a) DO NOT REPLY TO THE NOTIFICATION EMAIL! I get them, not the intended recipient. I get a lot of them and I do not want them! It is just a notification, log into the site and reply from there.

    b) To delete old conversations use the ‘Leave conversation’ option. This is just delete by another name.

Mike P has a 338esd that is upgraded to a very impressive spec and I have a 770ES that he has similarly upgraded to 870+ spec. Its very nice indeed!

My 338esd has received some modest but worthwhile upgrades to good effect and I'm hoping that an audiocom clock upgrade will benefit either my 338esd or a soon-to-arrive X7esd - depending which one I decide to keep.

Taff means 337ESD but I have done milder mods to 338's as well along with 555ESD, 333, 227, 228 etc.....

Do you service Sony amps Mike? If so where are you based?

One or two (!) ES items making up an (almost) all-Sony system:

    • Pre: TA-E80ES [black/wood]
    • Power: TA-N80ES [black/wood]
    • CD: CDP-R1a + DAS-R1a [champagne/wood]
    • Tuner: ST-770ES [champagne/wood]
    • Cassette 1: TC-KA7ES [champagne]
    • Cassette 2: TC-K990 ES [black]
All "stock" but all expertly and beautifully refurbished by David Morley at AVR in Surbiton.

To complete the system but not yet acquired (so suggestions welcome!):
    • Turntable: likely to be a Notts Analogue Interspace as I'm a huge NA fan.
    • Speakers: ATC SCM40 Mk 1

    Wow what a system!!!!

I'm massively jealous of your TA-E80ES, TA-N80ES and especially your CDP-R1a and DAS R1a combo.

If you ever get tempted to sell please let me know. Yes really, I'm NOT kidding.

Er, why not a Sony turntable? And speakers, come to that...

    Thanks, Mike!

E80s and N80s are easy to find, in the UK and even more so in Europe, especially Germany. Take a look on HiFi Shark and you'll see they turn up all the time. Buying from Germany is a joy - the chaps there are very easy to deal with and describe items very conservatively (in my experience anyway).

The CDP/DAS-R1a combo on the other hand are pretty hard to find. I massively overpaid for mine [from a well-known amateur self-appointed Sony "specialist" who I would most definitely recommend NOT dealing with...] and they've needed some work, but ultimately very happy to have found them!

    Mr. BB

As I said, am very open to suggestions, although they will have to go some to outweigh Notts Analogue and ATC...!

    Hi Robin,

Nice to hear from a fellow ES enthusiast. My own collection currently consists of: CDP-333ESD, CDP-337ESD, CDP-555ESD and TA-F770ES. The speakers I'm using are Tannoy Arden and Monitor Gold 15".

You see a lot of high end ES gear on ebay being sold from Germany but unfortunately it is all 220v rather than 240v. This generally isn't a problem with the CD players since most have multiple transformer taps making them configurable for either 220v or 240v operation. The amps are a different matter though.

OK then, how about PS-8750 and APM-66ES for starters?!

I service pretty much all makes of amp. But not CD players (generally. I sometimes make exceptions).

I have a PS-6750 here and it's a fantastic looking thing, a quality bit of kit (bit of a shame that for various reasons I haven't really used it and expect it to be returning to its previous owner at some point ).

The O.P.'s amp arrived with a snapped off volume potentiometer. I offered to repair it by fitting a new replacement OE spec pot but he decided to seek a refund instead.

I will need to investigate both - thanks for the tip!

I have two 338 ESDs, both unmolested. One isn't well and the other sounds superb. The DAC is outstanding.

What's wrong with the poorly one? I may be able to help.
